Distractions

You may have noticed that I don’t post many blogs. I’ve posted only 4 and I have a very good reason: I was overwhelmed! Couldn’t seem to commit to a theme, therefore didn’t get far on my website. I wasn’t following through in the classes. I was having trouble staying on top of emails.

So let me tell you what’s been going on with me. My daughter, Lisa and her husband Shane delivered their first child and our first grandchild on Jan 4 of this year. Lisa was able to take off 3 months maternity leave, but I chose to visit every week and stay 3-4 days so that I could offer support and guidance to the new parents.

A year ago, even though the town where my husband and I live is 3 hours away, I had offered to nanny Baby Gio and Lisa and Shane accepted. Beginning in April, I was living in my daughter’s home and babysitting full-time.

In the past couple months I have moved into an apartment and have slowly set up the apartment as my home away from home. I go home every weekend or my husband, John, visits me.

My work day can start as early as 7am and can go until 7 pm, but most days are 8 - 10 hours.

Gio’s nap and awake times are variable, but he is a wonderfully happy and active baby and I am enjoying myself more than I ever envisioned.

You are one busy woman Barbara. Quite the balancing act. Congratulations on being able to make it work!

Yes, thank you for your kind comments. I am having a marvelous time.
The people in our hometown think I'm either crazy or too selfless.
(except for a few, namely pregnant nurses who want to know if I'll be continuing my nanny career when I am home full-time). :-)

Even though I realize this is a burden on my husband - he's alone 4-5 days and nights - any guilt I feel in abandoning my husband for a few days a week is mollified by the knowledge that my presence is a reassurance to both Lisa and Shane. They can go to work with confidence that Gio will not only be taken care of but loved and adored. Despite all the inconveniences, I'm gaining so much - a stronger relationship with my daughter, I'm getting to know my son-in-law better and, best of all, I get to see that SMILE when Gio sees me.

Becoming a grandmother is the reward for having children.

And I fully intend to make the most of my time with Gio.

I wrote Distractions as the first part of a 3 part series as the light slowwwwly comes on.
