Why 'Provide Value' Is Advice That Sounds Good But Means Nothing Without This

Why 'Provide Value' Is Advice That Sounds Good But Means Nothing Without This

If you've spent any time in online business spaces, you've heard it a thousand times. "Just provide value." It gets repeated so often that it starts to sound like actual guidance, when really, it's one of the emptiest pieces of advice out there. Nobody ever tells you what it actually means, so you're left nodding along and still having no idea what to do differently.

Why This Advice Sounds Smart But Isn't

"Provide value" works as a slogan, not a strategy. It sounds true, so nobody questions it. But it doesn't tell you anything specific enough to act on. I nodded along to this advice for months while writing content that technically had information in it, but wasn't actually useful to anyone in a real way. I thought I was following the advice. I wasn't.

What I Was Actually Doing Instead

I was writing content that sounded helpful. Generic tips, surface-level advice, the same five points everyone else was already saying. It felt like value because it had information in it, but it wasn't solving anything specific for anyone. It was just noise dressed up as help.

The Missing Piece: Specificity

Here's what I think "provide value" actually needs attached to it to mean anything: value to who, for what specific problem, at what exact moment they're stuck. Without that, "value" is just a vague feeling, not something you can actually deliver.

Generic advice helps nobody in particular. Specific advice, aimed at one exact person with one exact problem, actually helps someone. The difference between "here are tips for affiliate marketing" and "here's exactly what to do if you have traffic but zero sales yet" is the entire difference between noise and value.

How I Changed the Way I Write Now

Before writing anything, I picture one specific person with one specific problem, not a vague audience. I ask what they're actually stuck on right now, not what sounds good to say about the topic in general. Then I answer that one thing as clearly and honestly as I can, instead of trying to cover everything related to the topic at once.

This shift made my content narrower, but it also made it actually useful. Fewer people might read any one post, but the ones who do get something they can actually use, not just something that sounds nice.

The Test I Use Now

I ask myself, could someone read this and actually do something differently afterward? Not "does this sound helpful," but "does this change what someone does next." If the honest answer is no, it's not value, it's just content that resembles value.

The internet is full of content that technically qualifies as "providing value" in the loosest sense. Vague tips, recycled advice, information without direction. Standing out doesn't come from adding more of that. It comes from being specific enough that someone reading it actually walks away knowing what to do next, not just feeling like they learned something.

"Provide value" isn't wrong, it's just incomplete. The real advice underneath it is: solve one specific problem for one specific person, clearly enough that they can actually act on it. That's the part nobody says out loud, and it's the part that actually matters.

Be honest, have you ever caught yourself writing content that sounded helpful but wasn't actually solving anything specific? Let me know in the comments, I think a lot of us have done this without realizing it.
