The One Question I Wish I'd Asked Before Picking My Niche

When I picked my niche, I asked all the usual questions. Is there demand? Is it too competitive? Can I monetize it? Every guide told me to ask those things, so I did. But there was one question I never thought to ask, and it's the one that would've saved me the most time in the long run.
No I had to re choose my niche. However, I have learned the lesson.
The Question I Skipped
"Will I still care about this in a year?"
That's it. That's the whole question. Simple, almost embarrassingly obvious in hindsight, but I never actually sat with it before jumping in. I was too focused on the external stuff, demand, competition, potential income, to stop and ask whether I'd actually still want to be talking about this topic six months or a year down the road.
Every "how to pick a niche" guide focuses on the market. Is there an audience, is there money in it, is it saturated. All valid questions. But none of them account for the person actually creating the content, meaning you, and whether you can sustain genuine interest long enough to see results.

Here's the thing nobody tells you upfront: results in this space take months, sometimes longer. If you don't actually care about the topic, that stretch of time where nothing seems to be happening becomes unbearable. You start dragging yourself to write posts about something that stopped interesting you back in week three.
What Happened When I Didn't Ask It
I didn't pick a niche I hated, but I also didn't pick one I was genuinely curious about long-term. I picked one that looked good on paper, decent demand, manageable competition, clear monetization path.
My biggest fault was I chose my partner's field.
For the first month, that was fine. By month three, he became busy and had no time to write.
That's worth paying attention to before committing months to it.
What I'd Tell Someone Picking a Niche Today
Do the demand research. Do the competition research. Those things matter and I'm not saying skip them. But don't let those be the only questions you ask. The market can tell you if a niche is viable. It can't tell you if you'll still want to show up for it after the excitement wears off, and that excitement wearing off happens faster than most people expect.
A niche can look perfect on paper and still burn you out if there's no real curiosity behind it. The best niche isn't just the one with demand, it's the one you'd still be interested in exploring even on the days nothing's working yet.
If you had to pick your niche again today, would you choose the same one? Why or why not? Let me know in the comments, I'm curious how many of us would answer differently now.
