Thank you WA for helping me developing a great niche that has branched out in so many directions the possibilities are endless!!!.

During my 30 day Healthy Living Challenge I found the courage to start a new body training program. At my age 35 years old I never thought I would be learning self defense & kickboxing. It's been an awesome journey learning the fundamentals of Kung Fu Style Choy Li Fut (AKA: Choy Lay Fut). During these classes I had learned to be more focus & patience under the guidance of my Sifu Barbosa. My children & I are fortunate to be able to share 1 hour a day together learning how to properly take care of ourselves in different situations.

During the past weeks I noticed my confidence started to build up & be able to do the basic moves with less struggle. My back pain has diminished & my legs feel much stronger. At the beginning I was super sore & felt like a truck hit me but as the days passed by & continued training my body has adapted very well. I recommend this type of Chinese Martial Arts to anyone who wants to start learning basic self defense.

Choy Li Fut stresses fast and powerful stance transitions coordinated with devastating combinations of smashing swinging fists, grabs, throws, roundhouses, uppercuts, punches, strikes and kicks.Choy Li Fut's hand techniques contain 10 elements: Kum 擒 slapping or pressing palm deflection, Na 拿 shooting arm bridge, Gwa 掛 back fist, So 掃 sweeping, Tsop 插 yin/yang knuckle strike, Pow 拋 upward power shot, Jong 撞 small upward power shot, Chaw 爪 claw, Bin 鞭 swinging power shot, Pei 劈 chopping, and Lui Yin 擂陰 yin/yang fist. Choy Layi Fut's leg techniques contain 6 elements: Chan 撐 bracing, Ding 釘 nailing, Liu Tat 撩踢 kicking, So 掃 sweeping, Jet 截 blocking, Au 勾 hooking, and Dan 彈 springing. There are 8 techniques of how the hand and leg techniques are applied. They are: Yin 陰 negative, Yang 陽 positive, Kong 剛 hard, Yau 柔 soft, Hui 虛 false, Shi 實 real, Tou 偷 stealing, and Lau 溜 sneaking.

Although Choy Li Fut’s roots reach back to the 6th century A.D., its synthesis by Master Chan Heung into a unique style occurred in the 1830′s. Initially, Choy Li Fut was a secret, emergency combat style used during the turbulent period of civil wars in ancient China. It has slowly become very wide spread and today is a very popular style of Kung Fu. Instead of Master Chan Heung selfishly calling his brand of Kung Fu the Chan style, he chose the name Choy Li Fut: “Choy” in honor of monk Choy Fook, “Li” in honor of Li Yau San, and “Fut” meaning Buddha (in Cantonese) to commemorate the Buddhist origin of the art since all three of his mentors could trace their lineage back to the Shaolin temple. During revolutionary battles between anti-Qing and government forces (1850–1877), whoever belonged to the Choy Li Fut system would identify themselves by crying out "yak" when striking with the palm, "wak" when thrusting with a tiger claw hand, "ha" when striking with the fist, "hok" when using a crane beak strike, and "dik" when kicking. These sounds are unique to the Choy Li Fut system. These sounds helps to build your confidence; increasing your Chi.

10 Rules of Choy Li Fut

These are the 10 rules of Choy Li Fut as set out by the founder of Choy Li Fut, Chan Heung.

1. Practice Choy Li Fut every day and do not forsake its way without reason.

2. You should practice not only to improve your skill and body, but also to develop a good and patient heart. Never use your skills to commit injustice or injury to others.

3. You must pay utmost respect to your teachers and seniors.

4. Pay your fellow classmates respect through trust, friendship, and honesty. Do not bully them in any way.

5. You are not to fight among your brothers of Choy Li Fut. In order to prevent this when in times of trouble, we use the tiger claw action as a sign that we are Choy Li Fut practitioners.

6. Do not drink alcohol and eat meat in excessive amounts. Alcohol takes away one’s sense of control and meat slows down the body. Therefore, the two taken excessively can damage your body and spirit.

7. When practicing Choy Li Fut, do not show others your skills without consideration as it may cause trouble to yourself and to others. If you judge a person to be of good nature, then you may pass on your knowledge.

8. Never misuse your skills on others or put yourself above them, as it only causes trouble. Practice Kung Fu to build a strong foundation for your body. Practice everyday and do not forsake its way.

9. All of the above are rules that the founder wishes us to follow, so to disobey these is to go against his wishes.

10. If you cannot abide by these rules, you may leave or, if you break them, then it is up to your Sifu’s discretion to assess your status within the school.

“Maneuver the staff with the power of the dragon’s slashing tail. Unleash a smashing fist as the majestic tiger instantly strikes.”

This is the motto of Choy Li Fut.

Its a wonderful style of kung fu that not only has thought me self defense but also has helped my back problems as well my confidence

Great Job! I am a firm believer in use it or lose it. As we get older we do less, therefore we can only do less. If more people would get up and start moving they will find their health is improving!

indeed!

very true
