Calling all Artists

Last Update: May 16, 2015

Calling all types of Artists from all walks of life...do you dream of your Art getting noticed and bought. Do you dream of being able to make an actual living out of this passion that you just can't shake? Then read on...

If you thought that being an Artist was all about being in your studio slaving away until an "Art buyer" came bounding up to your door on a white horse to buy all your Art up...think again. This is a tough gig, and it's a world where being sensitive can drag you into the depths of despair, but it can also take you far if you work with it wisely. I know because I was a very scared "little" creative type that was frightened to lift up my head for fear of rejection and a whole host of other nasties that I had envisioned for myself.

But thankfully I woke up one day and realised that no one was going to "make it" for me but me. It was a painful realisation at the time because I for one didn't have a clue about how I was going to do this. Long gone are the days of door knocking on gallery doors as most people seemed to be buying and selling online...everything is done online now and so to is exhibiting and selling works.

So thus begun my journey of researching online and I spent hours skimming through sites where people spoke of marketing and other foreign terms that my Fine Arts degree never even covered. I really felt out of my depth but realised that I needed to get my works "up" somewhere out in the matrix that would bring the masses to me. It sounds foolish now, but it was a good step in the right direction.

I signed up with etsy, it's free apart from the 20cents per work you exhibit. Over the months I started seeing traffic come to my virtual gallery and it gave me a boost. But this was just the first of many steps, after a time I then created a facebook fan page and included instagram. I then furthered my presence online by putting my work up in other virtual gallery sites...there are many to choose from and the sky is the limit there.

When I stumbled upon WA I knew that I needed a further platform for my Art and this I feel has been the missing link. Through my site I was able to link up my Etsy shop and facebook etc and through that I have noticed twice as many people are coming into my etsy shop now. And because of that I am reaching so many people around the world and guess what...my works are starting to sell more readily and people are contacting me about what I have for sale etc.

It's been a blast so far and the ball is starting to roll for me...I hope that all the other Artists/Musicians can get inspired too and further promote themselves. WA has every single tool that one would ever need in learning about online marketing and how to promote either your product or specified niche. My knowledge has expanded so much since being a part of this community...all Artists can benefit from this, us "right brainers" can easily so this.

Here is my latest piece that actually got sold before it was finished...thanks to what I have been learning here.

hi Khidari, I'm an artist too, I am feeling a bit lost because the WA platform seems to be more for blogging and well... affiliate things haha
I'm a children's book creator (i write and illustrate them) I'm still struggling to figure out exactly what to do with my site. Can you maybe tell me a bit of what you do and how WA has helped you? I don't want to take much of your time... But I'm looking for some help and clearance

The on-line trading is new to me. I am an artist who lives in Europe and have some kind of regular career, which means, that I exhibit and occasionally I am invited to talk about my work at various institutions, but, I don't sell. Many years ago, I had an agent in France who soon enough behaved incorrectly selling my work and keeping all the money for herself. I lived too far to do anything about it. You hear many stories like this from other artists and it makes you very cautious to propose your work to people you don't know. The result is that you don't sell.

Until recently, selling on line was considered selling yourself down, even now, I am warned that my artistic profile will suffer if I do it. I will approach it all very carefully but, I am sure that the future is here on-line and I also can't see why we the artists should always delegate making of our career to others.

That's awesome! My wife is an artist working on her online marketing right now. She bought the Abundant Artist program (which is pretty good) and plans on combining the knowledge she got from there with WA. I think it's bound to work but it takes dedication. I'm so thankful for this stuff. Thanks for the encouragement!

Thank you for sharing this, it's really nice (and necessary) to hear success stories from other artists. I just joined WA today and I will be working towards my goal of selling art online and learning about marketing. Also, this drawing is beautiful! Of course it sold before it was finished ;)

Love the picture. I haven't done art work in years because I was just doing it for myself. You have inspired me. Thank you.

I wonder if this works for writers, too. :)

I've been wondering that too. I want to do something with my stories, but I'd like to get some money out of them. I just haven't figured out what to do with that.

AmberSubaki Premium
You can do what I have done, and put your stories in a "catalogued" gallery so to speak. Make e books and then you can promote them via amazon and your site...I hear amazon is good in publishing work and taking care of the advertising etc.
Reply
nbethany Premium
I haven't checked out the Amazon publishing yet. I just read something about that on a blog about a month ago. I subscribe to book bub and a couple others that send you free reads in a daily email. There are many that could use some editing, so I wonder if that is the new story thing now. Selling them for .99 cents or read the first in the series for free. Are you books / stories online? Do you have them on a site of your own? I have no idea what a cataloged gallery is. :-) but I'd like to see what you mean.

I haven't written any books as of yet, or know much about writing. But you could create a header in your menu with your book hub? If you look at my site you can see how I have linked my etsy gallery/shop in the menu. If I were you, I would google around and see how you could get your stories up for sale? I only know of amazon doing it for e books...that way you could have your stories for sale rather than just "up there" for people to read free of charge.

Wow! Great stuff. It has always been a grind to find the time to make money from what I am which is also an artist. It was never enough to make a living from so other, more mundane jobs took most of that precious time up.
I can see you bridged that gap and can only hope that I get there myself. With WA, it certainly looks as though it's more possible.
Here's to the Journey, may your path continue to rise!

Hello again Amber; This botanical art never ceases to amaze. what I would like to know is what medium have you used for this piece. It looks to me like it could be a combination of inks, pastels acrylics and sharpies. I myself use all those plus anything that will get me the desired result. I find you to be a most interesting artist and person. pauly16

Many thanks Jeff, was actually thinking of how I could get my work into a gardening/botanical site. Etsy has an affiliate program which I have a shop in so if someone wants to buy a print, then they will go through your etsy banner link and you get the commission.

Hi Amber,
I have a similar progress and only recently started pushing my work more professionally online. I used Pixel.com & deviantart.com to try and sell prints of my work. It's a slow progress. I have most of it up on FB as well, but found that it didn't get far.
May I as how Instagram has helped you and if the Easy shop has made things easy for you? Do you have any advice for me?
I'm slowly building my sites here at WA to learn how to increase traffic.
I look forward to sharing success stories with you.
M.

I think you need an etsy shop and then you can attach the shop profile link to your account and then link it wherever you want such as through your own site and other places. This is a numbers game and sometimes it's about being patient and waiting...the more people that view your work the better :o)

Beautiful! I too had worked as a professional artist, until my eyes started going dim from old age!! You have a real talent..a gift!! You should do very well! I will enjoy checking back to see more of your work..but I would be careful, there must be something you can do so other's do not "steal" your work and make their own prints! I believe there is something you can do to "block" others from copying or downloading your pictures?? Good Luck to you!!

Basically what you are doing is what a friend of mine did in the good old non internet sales days. She studied business while doing her visual arts degree. Then realising that a country town wasn't a big enough market place she contacted, via uni contacts, others and they leased an old building in the Rocks area in Sydney. Yes it cost but they had enough members to make it affordable. And through this market they netted domestic and the international tourist trade. As passenger liners docked in this area they were one of the first things these disembarking tourists saw. They thought outside the box like you have and been successful. Well done and keep it up.

AmberSubaki Premium
Hey Helen, did your friend start up craft nsw at the rocks? I had a pop up gallery opposite them at george st for 1 month last year and met a lot of lovely people that exhibited there.

I can't remember the name but I think it was in the old customs building. Her name is Liz Stops but I don't know if she still does market there. It's been a while since I saw her.

Thanks for the lovely comments Jay...took about a month or so. I really need to put more hours in, still trying to get that balance between my site and my Art as one needs to be in a particular mindset to create.

It really is incredible, I want my mother to put more time into her work, but due to her arthritis she doesn't think she is any good.

But that particular sketch is outstanding, you really do deserve some recognition as an artist.
