I'm Not Here to Get Rich Quick!

Just the other day, my parents found out about my venture here at WA and this is what they had to say about it:

Dad: Why are you wasting money on doing an online business when you don't have a business degree?

Mum: Yeah amaiya (in place of my name). If you wanted to study business you should've said so.

Me: I like my major and I'm doing this business beacuse I see a future where I am involved with it. I don't know how much involved but I want to be in control of my independence.

Mum: Then why don't you wait until you finish your degree and get a real job

Me: I could do that. Or I could take advantage of the information I have in hand and do something with it instead of "waiting for the right time".

Dad: But you're not making any money.

Me: Of course not! You think I could make money in just 10 days?!

Premise

The day that my parents shipped me off to New Zealand to relieve financial strains on the family piggy bank, I vowed I would do whatever it takes to never be reliant on them again.

Coming to NZ was incredibly hard for the first few weeks. I missed Singapore very much and I knew no one here.

Worst of all, all my plans for university in Singapore all grind to a halt. All the friends I promised to hang with when term started and the new people I was planning to meet at the orientations were all gone in an instant.

If only I had been a bit more ambitious and did something with my time, then I wouldn't be away from everyone.

Granted I would meet new people but that isn't the point I'm trying to make here.

My Vow

I promised that by the time I turned 22, I would be financially independent from my parents.

As such, I am constantly posting content and improving my website every single day.

Am I making money yet?

Of course not! I don't have enough content and traffic to do that yet. I need to make a lot more posts.

How many?

I'm aiming for around 25 to 30 posts before I see any money making potential and that's just the start.

Don't Expect to Get Rich Quick

I've already been fooled with that once and I've lost a lot of money as a result.

Making mistakes like that doesn't make me more foolish than I am now but I will be incredibly stupid if I expect that to happen here.

I expect some profit to be made in around 6 months of doing this but I predict it won't be like a four figures kind of thing. Great if it is! But most probably not.

I have hope though that my long term goal of being independent from my parents would come to fruition but I will still have to depend on them for the time being, and that means to follow their whims and fancy whether I like it or not.

I may be packed up and shipped again to another country for some other weird reason but I have to grit my teeth and bear it for a while.

My goal is within my reach, I just have to always remember that it will take time.

Hope you have no intention of quitting the Degree?

I don't think you are but the conversation with your parents makes it sound like they are worried you might?

I think the degree should be the priority, with WA as the side project, something you enjoy and can build on in the future. I know most students have a side job while studying, stacking shelves, working in a bar, etc... WA is a much better idea than that if you can build up while enjoying it and maybe make some side money as things progress it is all good.

Just don't sacrifice the degree for it. That way you have ALL options open in the future.

You are young so just enjoy life, University, and your fledgling business.

Yes my parents are worried I might drop out cause of my dedication to my website but I love my major and what I'm leaning so I won't drop out even if I'm making money on the side. And you're right, all options are open to me if I do both.

Great attitude Amaiya! I think you did the right decision. Just make sure you work hard and don't give up even if you aren't making anything by 6 months.

I first learned about online marketing in 2011 I think. I got very excited but lacked direction and didn't work hard at it. Then I got a demanding job that required all my intellectual resources.

I didn't really enjoy the rat race and dabbled with online marketing but lacked consistency over time. Finally a year ago I joined WA and have dedicated my free time to my online business. By 6 months I was getting no income and was losing motivation once again.

This new year I started with a new site and wrote a post every day for the first month and several per week after that. That site started producing results in the form of Amazon affiliate commissions after second month.

My organic traffic is slowly but steadily rising and I will keep at it until I have at least well over 100 posts and a steady flow of organic traffic. I will then focus on my older sites that have gained some age but lack content.

I'm telling you this because I want you to know this stuff works. It just takes time, dedication, education and a bit of luck. And if I could turn back time I would go tell myself in 2011 to keep at it, would have saved me from so much stress in the long run. You're young and can achieve great things! I can tell from the quality of your writing here that you have all the necessary skill to succeed in this business. All the best!

Thanks for your sharing. I will keep going :)

Sounds like you have a great plan!! Good Luck

Thanks :)
