Not Ranking in Search Engines

Since I have been here almost a month I have been following the lesson plan when I can fit in the time. Have not ranked in Google or other search engines. I was on page 7 with a keyword that I was using in the beginning and decided to change it because as far as clicks for the keyword it was almost zero but ranked high in article power. Now I am regretting changing my keyword. Should we play around with keywords our will that hurt our websites? Should I go back to my original keyword that was ranking high but not a popular keyword search? Keywords is where I struggle. What is the best way to add outside links to our webpage? Do I just need to be patient and keep writing. I know my webpage is broad and I am trying to determine to choose a part of the beauty industry to slowly focus on but not sure when I will do that.
