Symphonic Metal in Focus: Visions of Atlantis

Hello again, everyone! I hope that those of you who read my last blog post found it enlightening, or, at the very least, interesting. Nightwish was definitely a trailblazer for the symphonic metal genre, and I'm hoping that we'll be hearing from more bands like them in the years to come. This week, we'll be focusing on a band that hails originally from Styria, Austria, and that group is known as Visions of Atlantis. This group picks up on Nightwish's influence and brings an element of storytelling to their powerful sound by creating a theme centered around the pirates of the 18th and 19th centuries. Further accentuating that theme is the band's use of the nautical flute, adding a level of depth to their sound. The band has had numerous lineup changes over the years, but despite those changes, they still manage to maintain their powerful musical punch.

Formed in Styria, Austria, the band openly carries the influence of trailblazers like Nightwish, but rather than simply echoing that sound, they lean hard into storytelling—specifically, the romance and danger of the open sea.

That narrative focus really began to crystallize with albums like Wanderers (2019). This record feels like a turning point for the band, where the pirate theme becomes more than just an aesthetic choice. Songs such as “Wanderers” and “Heroes of the Dawn” explore ideas of exile, searching for purpose, and the longing for freedom—concepts that fit perfectly with the image of sailors forever caught between the shore and the horizon. Musically, the album strikes a great balance between sweeping symphonic layers and driving metal riffs, making it both cinematic and immediately engaging.

They took that momentum and fully committed to the concept with Pirates (2022), an album that feels like a full-blown sea shanty epic filtered through symphonic metal. Tracks like “Pirates Will Return” and “Legion of the Seas” don’t just reference maritime life—they live in it. The use of nautical flute throughout the album adds a subtle but effective texture, reinforcing the oceanic atmosphere without ever feeling forced. It’s one of those details you might not notice right away, but once you do, it becomes impossible to ignore.

More recently, Pirates II – Armada (2024) expands that world even further. Where Pirates introduced us to the crew, Armada feels like the moment the sails are fully raised and the cannons are ready. Songs like “To Those Who Choose to Fight” and “Armada” bring a heavier, more confrontational edge to the band’s sound, while still keeping the lush symphonic elements front and center. There’s a sense of unity and defiance running through the album, as if the band is inviting the listener to stand shoulder to shoulder with them on deck.

One of the band’s strongest assets across these releases is their use of dual vocals. The contrast between male and female voices adds emotional depth and helps reinforce the storytelling aspect, often making songs feel like conversations or shared reflections rather than simple performances. It’s a technique that symphonic metal fans will recognize, but Visions of Atlantis uses it in a way that feels purposeful and narrative-driven.

Despite numerous lineup changes over the years—a challenge that has derailed many bands—Visions of Atlantis has remained remarkably consistent in spirit. Each new chapter of the band seems to refine their vision rather than dilute it, resulting in albums that feel more confident and cohesive as time goes on.

For listeners who were drawn into symphonic metal by bands like Nightwish, Visions of Atlantis offers something both comforting and exciting. They honor the genre’s foundations while boldly sailing in their own direction, proving that there are still new stories to tell and uncharted waters left to explore.

In many ways, Visions of Atlantis feels like a natural continuation of the path Nightwish helped carve decades ago. Where Nightwish introduced many of us to the sweeping power of symphonic metal—blending classical elements, metal intensity, and deeply emotional storytelling—Visions of Atlantis takes that foundation and steers it toward a more focused narrative world. Their pirate-themed epics show how the genre can continue to grow without losing its heart, proving that symphonic metal is not a static sound, but a living, evolving form of musical storytelling. If Nightwish opened the door to grand, cinematic metal for an entire generation, Visions of Atlantis reminds us that there are still countless stories waiting beyond the horizon—ready to be told, one album at a time.

As we look beyond the horizon, the next stop on this journey will explore another band that pushes the genre’s boundaries in its own unique way—one that blends symphonic metal with darker, more cinematic elements and a distinctly modern edge. Until then, keep your sails raised and your speakers loud.
