Where Focus Goes, Energy Flows

If you don't recognize the quote in this title, it's by Tony Robbins. But this idea has also been discussed by others that have spent their lives learning about the mind and body connection, how everything is connected in our world and ways to improve our chances of being successful.

This concept exists in success literature going back centuries. And for good reason.

Basic Truths

There are some very basic truths in life. And this is one of them..

Whatever you put your focus on, you'll ultimately get.

It sounds so simple. And it actually is that simple.

Does this mean if you focus on getting a billion dollars you'll see a billion dollars materialize out of thin air? No, not at all. But if you put your focus on a billion dollars, and then direct your focus on activities and investments that may lead you there.. you're infinitely more likely to be a billionaire some day than someone that directs their focus on poverty and activities that have zero chance of creating prosperity.

But let's think about it another way..

You wake up for the day. YOU decide if you're going to get up or hit the snooze button. YOU decide if you're going to find a few things to be grateful about or excited about, and see the day as an opportunity or annoyance. And everything you do during the day, every task that you complete, every opportunity you seize and every action you take depends on your focus.

It's just a basic truth. What you set your mind out to do, what you decide NEEDS to be done now. Ultimately gets done.

So why should it work any differently when it comes to creating a better life? More money. More time to do what you want. Better relationships. Or anything else you could desire?

It's So Simple, But We Forget

It's often the simple things in life, that are the most difficult things to master.

We know we should eat an apple, instead of grabbing that candy bar or bag of chips.

We know that if we aren't happy with where we're at in life, we should identify exactly what isn't feeling right, what we'd like to change, and seek solutions to our problems.. instead of allowing them to exist for months or years.

We know if we're constantly thinking about negative things, angered at the slightest thing going wrong, we should be working to find more positive things we can think about.

But somehow, despite knowing we need to direct our focus on good or positive things, we forget.

Direct Your Focus

Take control of what you focus on. Don't just allow the day to slip by without actively choosing what you'd like to accomplish or what results you're looking for. Don't allow the year to go by without giving any thought of who you'd like to become by the end of the year or what type of life you'd like to be living 5 years in the future.

Steer your focus away from the negative thoughts daily, hourly, by-the-minute if needed.

Think "is this thought serving me?" And start stopping those negative thoughts that pop in your mind at the gate.

It's not going to be easy at first. We have all learned bad habits that have become part of our subconscious programming. And our minds just keep on running these programs, until we CHANGE THE PROGRAM.

Battle With Your Mind

Your mind will work toward the goals that you give it. Good, bad or otherwise.

This is why focus is so important in our lives. If you lack focus or if your focus is on things you don't want, or your current situation which doesn't feel so great -- guess what? You don't take action. Or you actually dig yourself into a deeper hole because you figure "what's it really matter? I'm already [fill in the blank] anyway?"

So what happens? You don't end up anywhere different because the thoughts you're feeding your mind aren't helpful thoughts. They aren't going to get you somewhere different. They're more apt to continue hurting you and keep you in the same place, than EVER help you get what you want.

Direct your focus. Change your life.

You've been doing this all your life. Creating priorities. Taking care of what HAS to be done and can't be put off any longer. Putting the fires out. The question is, what have you been focusing on in the remaining time?

And are you getting the results of that focus? Because, you probably are.

Programming Your Mind, With Focus

If you aren't getting the results you want in life, it's time to change the programming.

Your mind is like a computer, ready to run whatever "software program" you give it. It just so happens that our thoughts and where we direct our focus are the equivalent of a software program.

The mind doesn't care if you're giving it a program that will produce good results or bad results. It just runs the program. It's up to each of us to learn how to create a GOOD program.

We aren't victims of circumstance in life, so much as victims of our own programming.

What feels like magic at times, when things seem to materialize for us, is often the result of us putting our focus on the results we want and expect in life -- and our minds helping us get there.

Change your focus, change the program, change your life.

Where focus goes, energy flows.

Great post Ace. A wise man told me, "don't focus on making money, focus on doing the things that are going to make the money." Easy to say, but definitely something that I have to remind myself to do daily.

Thanks Frank! That's a wise saying. I've got to do the same almost daily as well! It's very easy to get discouraged when you're putting in effort and nothing seems to be happening. But keep working at pursuits that you know will have value to others, and eventually the money will come.

A perfect example I can give is in my other business, I'm assembling raw materials into a final product. I have wasted a lot of time focusing on a stretch of days or weeks with very few sales. I'm so focused on the [lack of] money at those times, that I don't get anything done.. just thinking like that is exhausting in itself. You mentally exhaust yourself and feel like you ran a marathon, but got nothing done. When sales do come in, you're then behind. It really is best, as you said, to keep focus on activities that will make you money in the long-run and not the money itself. Excellent comment!
