Understanding Users needs& Goals

Before building your website it is a good idea to consider the reason for users visiting your website by using the 5 W's; Who, What, Where, Why, When, and how.

  1. Why are users on my website?
    a. What are their needs?
    b. What are they trying to get out of my website.
    c. What makes it a successful visit for them.
    d. How can we help them along the journey?
    e. have they considered a competitor.

    2. How do we find out
    a. Talk to your colleagues
    b. call centre
    c. get a recruiter involved
    e. Talk to the user

    3. Use Analytics Websites
    a. What is the statistics of your website?
    1. Who is visiting
    2. What pages do they go to?
    3. Where are they from
    4. What device are they accessing your website?

    b. Website analytics can
    1. measure the number of visits to your site
    2. measure pages and bounce rate
    3. know when people leave your site by percentages
    also new visitors and returning visitors.

    C. Do an information survey about your users
    1. Why have they come here?
    2. What are your goals?
    3. Did you like what you found?

    D. Create Persona
    These will be a rich resource for you to use when you start writing.

Sadly this is the single most important part of marketing, and is almost always totally overlooked by newbie marketers.

Those who omit this vital step are guaranteed to fail.

You can immediately tell winners from losers simply by asking "who is your target market?" and listening to the answer.

If the answer does not contain a name, age, gender, marital status, occupation, family connections, etc then this marketer has no hope of success.

Understanding the user is very important if you want to have a successful business.
