Heads or Tails? Win or Lose?
If you have a 9 go 5 job making $50,000 a year working 40 hours a week and you had a chance to own a business where you could make a little more but would have to work 70 or 80 hours a week which would you choose?
Subway has more franchises than any company in the world, even more than McDonalds. That's because the franchise fee is low enough that a lot of people can afford it. Unless you are rich enough to buy multiple franchises and hire a general manager to run it what you have done is to buy yourself a 70 or 80 hour $60,000 to $70,000 a year job. That's what the average Subway franchisee does.

If you owned a bunch of them you would have a general manager running them while you spent your time on your other businesses.
Peyton Manning owns 21 Papa John's. Do you think he ever goes in one except to pick up a pizza?
Interesting comparison, Neil. And with a franchise, you are still working according to someone else's regulations. (Corporate has many rules for franchisees)

If I only earned 60-70K for 78-80 hrs, I MIGHT be better off sticking to the 9-5 ESPECIALLY if it was a restaurant even Subway. Just my take based on simply $$$/time.
