If you own a blog or a website search engine optimization (SEO) will be a key skill set to master in order to benefit from free traffic available through search engines. In this post I will discuss how to do SEO and keyword research.

An effectively search engine optimized site decreases the cost of acquiring traffic and increases the potential of generating revenue.

What Excactly Is SEO

According to Wikipedia, "search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of affecting the online visibility of a website or a web page in a web search engine's unpaid results—often referred to as "natural", "organic", or "earned" results."

In layman's terms SEO is about setting up your website in a way that search engines will easily find your content and display it on their "organic" or unpaid results as seen below.

Ultimately, search engines will rank the content that is most relevant to the search phrase.

So in the example above, the 3 websites that I've highlighted have optimized their pages effectively for the search phrase "how to do seo yourself in 2018" as they appear on the top 3 results of the 1st page of google.

This means that these sites are benefiting from free traffic from google due to effective seo.

How Do You Do Effective SEO

Step 1: Select A Niche

The first step to do effective seo is to select a niche that you want to target. A niche is a distinct segment of a market or in other words an audience with a particular interest.

When selecting a niche ideally it should be in an area that you have a particular interest in, a hobby, a passion or even something that you would like to learn about.

You must be careful however not to be too broad when selecting a niche, otherwise you will be unlikely to benefit from SEO.

Think of a niche as simply a group of people looking for something, but something specific.

Being specific makes it easier for you to connect and engage with this group of people because the content will be relevant which is what search engines want.

Step 2: Make Sure There Is A Big Enough Market In Your Chosen Niche

Just because you still enjoy watching VHS tapes does not necessarily mean that this may be an effective niche to target if you want to rank your site with the idea of making money from it.

You need to ensure that there is a big enough market in your chosen niche for you to be able to generate revenue. One easy way to determine market size of a niche is to go to amazon.com.

Amazon has products in just about every niche you can think of and if amazon is stocking the product, then there is definitely a big enough demand in that niche as amazon would have done the research already.

Step 2: Do Your Keywork Research

Once you've selected a niche, you need to research how the group people you have targeted, search for content on search engines. Which keywords do they use when they are looking for content?

So if my niche is "organic skin care for women", what search phrases would a person looking for content in that niche use when searching on search engines?

To do the research I will need help from a keyword tool. You can use google's free keyword planner tool or better yet, the more advanced and effective Jaaxy Keyword and Niche Research tool which is also available through this amazing platform.

As you can see above, according to Jaaxy, the keyword "organic skin care for women" generates an average of 132 monthly searches and has only 20 websites competing for that keyword and is considered to be a really good keyword to target for SEO purposes with an SEO rating of 96.

Jaaxy even tells me that the domain "organicskincareforwomen.net" is available which will be great for SEO, but it is preferable to have a.com domain as it is considered to be more valuable.

In the beginning, you want to target keywords that get at least 50 searches a month and have less than 100 competing websites and a seo rating of 90+.

Step 3: Create Relevant Content

The final step is to create content that is relevant for the keyword. The basic formula for creating effective content is to;

1. State the problem
2. State the solution
3. State the benefit
4. Have a clear call to action (CTA)

When creating content try to write in a conversational tone that is consistent with the language of your niche. Avoid the tendency to tell but rather focus on showing your audience how and what to do in order to benefit from the content.

Conclusion
