Do you provide stimulation for your brain?

When, we have been blogging for a while we can end up on autopilot which can make us feel restless. When you think about it our brains need some stimulation to that we can channel our restlessness into creative thoughts and wake up the inactive parts of out intelligence.

So How can we fix this?

Sometimes we are midway through typing a sentence and we are searching for a word or we forget our train of thought. The answer to this is always take a break from what you are doing, have a rest, drink some water and find something else to do.

So what can we do to help reignite our brains?

Our brains are salvageable, resilient and functional. I don't know if any of you do crossword puzzles in newspapers, magazines or books. But when I am stuck on something to write about I often look for a keyword. These keywords that you find in crossword puzzles can often be the word you are looking for to finish off your sentence.

Solving Crosswords puzzles has many benefits

  • helps with verbal communication
  • it aids dementia
  • helps us to recall words

Visualise your brain split in two

  • creativity, emotions intuitive (right side)
  • logical, orderly and systematic (left side)

When we do a crossword puzzle we use both sides of our brain. Yep two sides of the brain, not just one side at a time.

So remember when you get stuck for words, have a break with a favourite drink (sorry no alcohol) and do a crossword puzzle. You will find it will help stimulate your brain and wake up the dormant side.

I hope this helps.

Our brains could certainly do with a quick boost of stimulation from time to time Yvonne!

Crossword puzzles are a great way of getting those neurons to wake up and buzz around again, and consuming a non alcoholic beverage when thirst kicks in is essential, although I am partial to a glass of red wine or two when the need arises!

Thanks for your helpful advice my friend and have a fabulous start to the new week!:-)

Hi Yvonne

On the premise that avoidance is better than cure...
I use the Pomodoro technique as a discipline. Various American and European Unis have studied efficiency in learning, which kind of translates to efficient focusing for a period of time.

There is universal agreement that we can focus intently for about 22 minutes-ish without a break. If we then take 5 minutes to do something else (exactly as you suggest) then get back to intense focus for another 25 mins we can repeat this many times during the day. I tend to do 2 hour stretches 3 times each day.

People who practice this are far more productive than those who try to focus for longer periods.
Personally, I use a small free timer App called Toggl to help keep the discipline.

If you haven't heard of Pomodoro, it's worth googling.
:-)

Hi Richard I have heard of it, will take another look. It’s a great way to do things.

Thanks for sharing this Yvonne. Yes, I've also found taking a short break helps. I've often stepped away from the laptop, made myself a coffee, fed the cat, or even taken a walk outside. Then, going back to the post I was writing I can see grammatical errors, better ways to phrase a sentence and ideas flow easier. I used to do crosswords but got out of the habit. They certainly are good for keeping the brain sharp

Great post, thank you Yvonne for sharing. Yes, I usually take a break, go outside and look at the greens around to refresh my brain. I also play crosswords which is a great brain exercise. It makes my memory stimulated and makes my brain active

That's great to know. I often find certain words help me in expression.
