Why It Always Pays To Be Kind
I was talking with some students in class one day and I explained the importance of being kind to those you come in contact with in life. I told them a story that happened several years ago now:
On a chilly evening right before the elections one year, a lady knocked on my front door and introduced herself as Helen. She was going from house to house, making sure people were registered to vote and was asking a few survey questions. She seemed a bit cold, so I told Helen to step in to get warm. When she stepped in, I offered her something to drink. She was so appreciative of my hospitality and thanked me several times for being so kind. We talked for a while and she left.
A few years later, I was working with a group of consultants on a new company-wide project. I was very happy to be working on this special project and I enjoyed working with my new group. During the course of the project, I went to a meeting with the consultants and there was a lady in the meeting and she said "I remember you! I was going from house to house and you were so nice and let me come in and warm up. You gave me something to drink." It hit me - it was Helen!
Shortly after the project began, I started having a really rough time with my shoulder. An old injury had reared its ugly head and as time went on, I discovered I needed to have surgery.
After the surgery, I was in quite a tough situation. Just recently divorced, two young children, not able to drive for six weeks, and no one around to help me. I was really struggling during this time, especially with getting to the store to grocery shop for me and my children.
One day, one of the consultants had called to check on me to see how I was doing. I told him how I needed to grocery shop, but I couldn't drive. He said to me "I can help you, Yvette. That's what I do - help people. I will send my assistant over to you and she would be happy to take you shopping." I couldn't thank him enough. It was so refreshing to know there was someone who could help me in my time of need.
The next day, his assistant showed up at my house to take me shopping. His assistant was Helen.
That's why it always pays to be kind.
I truly believe in karma. I feel that when you are kind to others, that kindness will come back to you.
When I need assistance with this journey I have embarked upon in WA, I know I can always go to someone in this community for help. There is nothing like it when I have a problem and someone is there to my rescue, just like Helen was those years ago.
What you give, you will get back. Keep up the great work everyone. I truly appreciate you.

I believe in karma definitely. One's thoughts and actions will be reflected back to you. It's taken me many years to realize this truth.
This was an amazing story, Yvette! It really does pay to be kind, I believe in what comes around goes around. Your kindness came back 10 fold and you deserved it.
What a great story! The Helens in our lives contribute so much, and it is amazing that how we act toward people brings them to us! Love it. Thank you.
It's such a cold one that I think I will have to put in extra blog focus! Enjoy yours too.
What a great post! I agree you will never regret being kind!
A smile and a word of encouragement mean more than we sometime will ever realize.
Wonderful, how it all comes back to kindness. I saw a saying the other day "if you can only do one thing, be kind".
Thank you, this just made my evening!
