I'm Like A Postage Stamp and You Should Be Too!

When I think about all the things I've accomplished in my life, I realize I was always one of those people that when I started something, I stuck with it. I was never one to give up - even when others told me there was no way I could do whatever THEY thought I couldn't.

I have had some very difficult times through the years (that's a blog for a different day). But, yesterday, I stopped to reflect about where I am because of my persistence. I thought about where I would be if I had given up on things. Wow! What a different life I would have.

SEARCHING AND SEARCHING
My mother died when I was three months old and my maternal grandmother raised me. I am the youngest of my mother's seven children. Unfortunately, all of my siblings and I got split up among different family members to live with after my mother died.

As I got older, family roots became very important to me. It was so important, I got involved with doing some genealogy, became chairperson of two family reunions on my father's side and even started building my family trees - first on my father's side, then on my mother's. That's when I ran into a snag. My mother's side of the tree had hardly any information at all. After searching and searching - nothing. I got stuck. I couldn't find any more written history.

Prior to conducting the tree, I set out several years ago to locate my living relatives on my mother's father's side. My maternal grandfather passed away many years ago, so I didn't have any additional information to guide me. Once again, I searched and searched. I screened all kinds of genealogy websites, looked in phone books and called people - you name it. I almost gave up several times because I would keep hitting a brick wall. I became extremely frustrated. Where was the information? Ugggh!

As I was working on my computer yesterday, I came across this quote and thought "Yes! This is me!" I realized I am like a postage stamp:

WHAT HAPPENED RECENTLY
To make a very long story short, a few days ago, I was given some information that changed my life. I was having a conversation with someone and the information he shared led me to a website. While I was searching that website, I found who I thought may be a relative and sent a message to a complete stranger explaining who I was and crossed my fingers! Could this be my relative? Will she respond to me?

The person responded and YES! She is my relative! My 20-year search was finally over! And guess what I found out? She had been searching for me, too! She and her siblings wanted to know what happened to that little baby they saw at the funeral? That baby was me, at the tiny age of three months old, and we were finally reunited!

Since I have found my relatives, I can't quite put it into words. Because I lost my mother when only an infant, I have needed to close a gap. Fill a void. And after talking to my cousins, I feel like I am finally complete in that area of my life! My mother is looking down upon me with the biggest smile! I didn't give up, Mom. I found them!

DON'T GIVE UP - NO MATTER WHAT!
Just like I didn't give up looking for my family, I am not going to give up on WA - and trust me - there have been several days I wanted to throw my laptop right out of the window! But, instead of doing that, I would walk away for a while, take a deep breath and say to myself "I am not going to be defeated. I am going to get through this. I am going to win!" I would then put my head down and plow through the task at hand.

I will not give up - no matter what! I am going to continue to be like a postage stamp and stick to it till I get to the top! And don't YOU give up, either! We are in this together and I'm happy to be on this journey with you.

Thank you for letting me share my joy with you, WA family. Have a wonderful day.

Powerful message for all to keep in mind. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you. I am glad you liked it.

Aaaaw Yvette, Thank You so much for sharing your touching story. You brought tears to my eyes. I am sooo happy to hear you are finally reunited with your mother's family.
Well done for being a postage stamp. Your perseverance was richly rewarded and will be again as you stick to WA and build your websites. You will not be disappointed.
I know that feeling of wanting to throw your laptop out the window. I've been there. And I know may feel that way again because I am still working on an old laptop with one missing key and I still have to endure intermittent internet. ;)
But I am a postage stamp too. And I can see us walking into our bright future.

Thank you for your kind words...so sweet! Sounds like we have a lot in common with the computer throwing thing. But I know we won't do that. So let's hang in there together and we will see a bright future. It's going to happen!

Great analogy and story. Your perseverance will get you far in life! Wishing you the very best in 2018

Thank you Yvette for this great story and I am so glad that the person did turn out to be your relative. A nice end to a long search and to then find out they had been also searching for you must have made you feel so happy.

I liked that quote about the stamp and thought it was very appropriate for what we are doing here at WA. xxxx

Thank you for all the kind words. I appreciate it. I am so very happy to know they were searching for me too. I feel so loved. Warm wishes to you.

What a wonderful story Yvette! How inspiring. I would love to look into my family's genealogy one day.

Thank you. Yes, do it one day...it is so interesting the history you find. All the best to you.

Yvette... so great you found them...
Moved me a lot....

Did a lot of genealogy search too and always bumped into a researcher... who died... even after her dead, her search leaded me to new findings...

Leave a trace... your message will be picked up one day...

Thank you and that's great you found a researcher. Continue to search, Fleeky. And yes, I have my trees out on line and shared electronic and written information with my siblings and their children.

Have an awesome day.
