I used a sitemap generator and it gave me a message that reads: "This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it.".

I had some problems with my sitemap before as well. Have you tried using the site map from the All in One SEO plugin?

Go to All in One SEO then click on Feature Manager (like the image below). Then active the XML Sitemaps feature.

Let me know if that works!

The style information isn't important and the web bots will still be able to read the xml file. The styling just makes it look pretty to the eyes but crawlers don't care about that. I think the message is just letting you know this, not saying you need to fix it.

Which sitemap generator did you use?

If you are having problems i recommend this training package... it works Let me know how you get on!

My site is up & running & finally starting to get some attention. but when I built it, I didn't use any child themes. I used the 2014 theme and I love it and I don't wa

What exactly does that mean? Change things in the editor? My fonts are all pretty basic. I haven't done anything fancy. I don't touch the
coding because I'm not familiar with exactly what everything means. Just that I have formatting and alignments that i purposely did.

I still don't understand, do i moved to use child theme? And is it going to be a huge deal to do whatever i need to to protect my stuff?

I appreciate people offering such a wealth of information and I'll get to the videos as soon as i can, but are the answers to my questions that complicated that it'll take me that long to understand the answers?

(Sorry. Just a pet peeve of mine, i guess. I'm a pretty direct and logical person who's pretty limited on time these days.)

I'll check the training/videos out asap. Have a great day!!

As long as you haven't changed anything in your Editor, thats the "theme" editor, not your pages and posts, then there is nothing to worry about

Was only trying to help...... You have an even better day

As I re-read the message now, I can see how my message probably sounds like it was intended in a sarcastic tone. It honestly was not. I'm very sorry for not noticing my wording earlier.

It was a sincere question. What I should have said was:

What does it mean to "change something in Editor?" I don't understand what the terminology means, i guess. What's the theme editor as opposed to another type of editor? Are you referring to the HTML/coding tab on my pages or posts?

What I was actually trying to say was that I appreciated that you were trying to help by explaining, rather than sending me to other links & trainings like the other responses. I appreciate that.

I just needed more clarification and I figured you might be the one that may be able to explain it to me (as obviously I'm a little slow on some of these things) because you seemed to have the teaching style I need.

So again, Gordon, I really apologize for sounding so crabby and abrupt in my reply to you. It was actually my reaching out, but when I was very tired and didn't read before hitting send.

I do hope you had a good day and I hope you have an even better night.

:-)

No problem Lynn, I can understand your frustration with terminology, been there myself, it gets easier the as time goes by.
There are 2 types of "editor"
1. your pages and posts, this is where you have a bar or two above the page/post your are writing to be able to change the font size/colour, etc.see image 1
2. the other editor is your "theme" editor, where you want to change or add things to your theme, see images 2+3.
This is where people say use a "child theme" because if you want to change the appearance using css coding( something else you are probably not familiar with yet)of the theme you are using, if and when there is an update to that theme, the changes will be lost, as the update will take the theme back to the default settings.
I dont use a child theme because i dont make changes to the css coding( not that clever yet) in my themes.
If you want to change your themes apperance, ie: colours, headings, sidebars etc, this can be done in the theme options, and will not affect your theme if it is updated
Hope this has clarified your concerns a little better

Gordon

When I make any changes or updates to my site, I go to [image #2], then [image #1].

Here is the very short list of all the plugins that I use.

It sounds like I have nothing to worry about because whatever they are talking about (as far as changes they've lost) is in a place that I don't go anywhere near.

At what point will it become something to worry about?

If I do have to use a child theme, is it as simple as going here [image #2} and changing the dropdown to show the original post name?

I think, from what you have here, that this is absolutely nothing I have to worry about yet, right?

Again thank you for breaking it down for me in exactly the way that I needed to grasp it.

- Lynn

Image 1 will appear on any page or post when you are writing or adding to that page/post.
Image 2 is the wordpress dashboard to enable you to go straight to various sections of your site.
Image 3 dont even worry about at this point in time, you are not going to have to access it, the only time you will have to go to this editor is when you want to add affiliate links and they want to establish your site, or you have to add some code to your "header", but all that is in the future, and can be explained more in depth when you need it.
If you dont understand anything come back to me

Gordon

Hello Lynn, in addition to Marion's info, Rob's training for setting up a child theme might also help: ~Jude

Some things change every time WordPress, themes and plugins get updated. If you modify anything in the Editor then next time there's an update your modifications will get overwritten. So any modifications should be done in a child theme. This explains a bit more for you Always back up your site before adding plugins, changing themes or updating

Ok. I've build my website. Now I need to build whatever I need to do to generate some income. The answers to my questions are buried under too much information. I have so many

No money is made until someone buys something. That could be a product or a service that you are selling by the affiliate link on your site. Often affiliate products are managed through a middleman so the payments etc would come from there. i.e. if you want to sell godaddy on your site, they don't do the bookkeeping for that anymore so you would register at another site like Clickbank or JVZoo or Clickbank etc. Most times they want to know your website address first before they would give you a link. Some have turned me down so I guess I'm not big enough! Some ask how many visitors you expect per month. So get your website ready first. Then put your links. You don't have to do them all at once either. Do one at a time. You can move them around later as you add.

People usually put banners in "widgets" in sidebars and footers. There are ways to put clickable links there too.

I know there's a lot of info but you will be surprised how six months from now, you will be reading instructions on this stuff and just clicking and pasting along with no problem. I think when we first start off, it's not just all the tasks and technology that seem foreign but the language too.

Just keep that old say in mind: how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.

Pat, thanks for your input for Yael Lynn. I really feel so lost sometimes also with all the information I have to take in and remember. I sincerely hope that I will better understand the procedures of putting a website together in six months.

Thank you for breaking it down for me. You really did clarify quite a bit for me, as well as reassure me that I'm not as slow as I'ave started to feel.

I really appreciate your help and input.

When I insert media (add a photo) inside my content, I can't type next to it. It's like the media takes up on line, just a HUGE font size. How do I insert a picture, like next

When you click on your picture, you can choose to edit it. When you've done this, you can choose a size. I suggest you take the medium size or thumbnail. You can also choose to put the picture on the left, the center, the right, if you choose left or right, you normally it should be possible to place some text next to it.

You're welcome!

Thanks LaRiri. Let me clarify, if you don't mind.

When I put a small enough picture in justified left, I can only type one line (centered on the line) to the right of it before it goes down to the next line. I'd like to be able to use a picture, justified left and make commentary on that just to the right of it. May take 5-6 lines to do so.

I hope I explained that correctly.

I appreciate your help.

When you first build the site, how do you set it up so no one accidentally shows up on your site while you're still working on it? Just while I'm adding content, what if someon

Hello,

The best thing you do is follow Kyle in his step by step explanation with visuals in the courses...
I can never explain it as well as he does in the course, just follow those...

(Green button on the left hand -side)

What concerns the update of a new page: the person that is looking at the page at that moment is looking at a cached page on his own computer, not directly on the server where you do an update.
So the visitor has to refresh the page manually or it happens after a period of time...
