10 Simple Tips To Write Your Blog

When I first started online I was scared to death or writing. I was telling myself I cannot write, where do I start. No-one is going read what I write. Who would be interested?

I bet you can relate to this, we all go through these feeling at one time or another.

So what is the answer?

Just be yourself, write as you would talk. You know the majority of people read at the 7th grade level, that's right same reading level as children.

There are many writing styles but when you start you are writing to engage your readers. To build a trust and increase the follows on your site, blog or social media.

Things You Need To Engage readers?

  1. Shorter Sentences: As mentioned early write at the 7 grade level. No need to prove you have an enormous vocabulary. When writing in WordPress I use Yoast SEO plugin, it has a section at the bottom of your editor where it rates the readability of your post. Microsoft Word will also give you readability scores.
  2. Use Headings and Sub heading: There is a proven pattern in the way people read online. They have a very short attention span so you need to grad and keep their attention. Headings and Sub Headings give the reader the ability to be able to scan your document and quickly get an idea of what it is about.
  3. Use Power Words: There are certain words considered power words which will grab your readers attention. These are words which tap into your readers emotions and will vary according to your niche. Do your research and understand how your niche think and speak. What word they use.
  4. Write with a Story Telling Approach: Unless your article is instructional you should write like you are telling a story, Make it easier for your readers to remember by using your experiences, incorporate the facts and points in your story.
  5. Involve Your Readers: Write in the 2nd person using the words "Your(s) and You" to engage your audience and pull them into your writing.
  6. Give Yourself a Break: Writing can e exhausting, give your self a regular break. Get away for your keyboard.
  7. Believe in yourself: If you doubt yourself it will show in your writing. Never use words like "I will try" or "If I can". Make sure you use positive language.
  8. Write Compelling Headline: You only have seconds to grad your readers attention so your headline is critical. In those seconds they need to feel compelled to read further. When you capture their attention here it does not stop, you sub headlines need to be just as good.
  9. Know You Subject: Read, Read and read more. You need to continually educate yourself in your chosen niche. Is previous training I was taught the ILT principle. Invest, Learn and teach. What this means is invest in yourself by learning, then immediately teach what you have learned.
  10. Don't Be Put Off By Haters: It is impossibly to please all the people all the time. When you have negative comment (and you will) realize these readers are entitle to their point of view. Accept their comments and move on. Do not take it personally.

Well that's my view on writing. Everyone has to start somewhere. As Nike say "Just Do It". When you are stuck, just start writing naturally as you would speak. You will be surprised how quickly the word will start coming.

So I hope you got some value from this, and question or comments will be appreciated.

Best of luck with your business

Cheers Kev

Thanks for writing this. English is my third language and I have problems when it comes to writing long articles. I really like point no. 1 -Use short sentences. I guess I can write shorter sentences.

Follow these guidelines and write in MS Word. It will help your spelling and grammar. It also takes stress away when you are not writing on your blog. Hope this helps. Cheers Kev

This is very helpful. I agree that having a compelling headline is needed. I find that I am much better at expressing my self better on paper. I also love reading so having knowledge on your topic is very important. Thanks for sharing.

Marsha, I write what's on my heart so it's something I've experienced and have knowledge of. People want the truth, that's what I bring to them.
