Time Is Wasting Away

Time is a very limited resource. We only have so much of it.

I must admit, I have always been fascinated by time...and it was drilled into me from childhood.

As the old saying goes, show up on time and you're 5 minutes late. Be 5 minutes early and you're on time. That's how I roll.

Every one of us has the same amount of hours and days available. Roughly, that equates to about 8760 hours per year.

Multiply that by your age...well, you get the point.

But how do we actually spend our time?

Most people will do similar things during each day, such as eating, sleeping, working and relaxing.

The rest of those daily hours may vary depending on whether or not you have a commute, activities or specific chores that require your time.

Are you curious to know what some of the biggest time wasters actually are?

Well, according to a recent survey of 2000 people in the U.K. by OnePoll, results showed that the average person loses almost a month of their year simply by doing "nothing."

Some of those massive time wasters included things like the following:

  • waiting in line
  • waiting on hold on the phone
  • sitting in traffic
  • scrolling social media
  • waiting for a cup of coffee/tea
  • waiting for the laundry to finish
  • sitting at restaurants awaiting an order
  • waiting for a delivery
  • watching tv
  • being online

Are you starting to see a pattern?

Looks like a lot of us are "waiting" for something to happen. This study also showed many participants were eager to work on time management, as well as learn new skills. But most admitted they were plain tired from juggling all their obligations.

Be More Aware

At the end of the day, some time is going to be wasted inevitably. However, being aware of the limited time we do have can inspire us to make each moment count.

Time stands still for no one. So live with intention. Be aware. And while we are all waiting at times, use that time to refocus, prioritize, think of new keywords or simply enjoy the moment.

What are your biggest time wasters?

Very inspiring post, Susan.

I have certain family members that will, literally, talk on phone or text for hours about
trivial stuff and many times I fall asleep on the phone. Lots of small talk.

There must be a better way to stay connected with family and friends.
Like my dad would say. "talk is cheat, it takes money to buy land."

To me, gossip is non-productive. Also, I learned that waiting in line at the bank, at Costco's or anywhere, you can do stretches, a few mini yoga routines that are good time-fillers.

Rachele

Thank you, Rachele. You’ve got the idea. I like that quote of your dad’s. Continue to enjoy each moment to the fullest.

Thank you, Susan. I feel better now, as I see those things that waste my time are mostly beyond my control. I don’t watch TV almost ever and I don’t do Facebook, so I get frustrated at how fast the time flies. Setting priorities and organizing is challenging too. But it is what it is and we do the best we can.

Hi Donna…You are so right. We can only do so much. And it’s still important to remember to have time out to relax when necessary. Over-scheduling every minute is a whole other issue. Have a lovely day!

Susan, thank you for your interesting blog.
I don't really see watching TV as time wasting :)
I guess because it is serving a purpose by being a stress reliever for me

For me, procrastination and being a part of senseless chatter is what I would call time wasting

But as long as you're moving in a positive direction, then your outcome will be productive

That’s an awesome way to look at it, Simone. TV can be educational, relaxing or a way to escape indeed. I agree with you…keep moving forward however that works best. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

You're welcome :)

A captivating post, Susan! 👍

Imagine if we could convert all that waiting and sitting into time to do things we enjoyed more. 😎

Frank 🎸

Hi Frank..,that would be incredible. I always daydream about what I’d rather be doing when waiting mindlessly lol. How many more hours of guitar playing could you be enjoying! 😎🎸

Hi, Susan

I could play guitar all day! All of a sudden I look at my watch and it’s four hours later. 😎

Wow, Susan! a very compelling post! I try to make the most of each day, but now I know that I still have a lot more work to do!

Thanks, Jeff! You are more than busy from what I can see. But it’s equally important to know when to take a breather. Have a great evening! 🐶😹🐶

You're welcome, Susan, there are definitely times to take breathers.

I did have an excellent evening! I hope that you did too!
