My Experience With Wealthy Affiliate Bootcamp

Last Update: May 23, 2014

Even though I have been here at Wealthy Affiliate for a few years, my niche wasn't in "making money online." I had always heard that because of the high competition it would be difficult to make money in this niche.

But last year when Kyle started the affiliate boot camp, I decided to go ahead and go through the training. My thinking was that since I've been doing affiliate marketing for a while, it would be a good extra niche and it could also bring in some extra income. Plus it would give me a chance to help other people out there who are struggling to make money online. And I figured, since I have first hand experience, I wouldn't have a problem coming up with ideas of what to post about.

What I got was so much more. First of all, I learned everything I would ever need to know about creating a WordPress niche website. (Even with all the training here, I had always been a bit confused with WordPress). It was the boot camp (thank you Kyle) that helped give me confidence. And, when it comes to WordPress, I'm still not an expert....

But I am getting results! And I'm excited about it.

I started seeing signups in December and since then, I have been seeing my newbies go premium. Each month my sales increase with Wealthy Affiliate between 30% and 50%. Wow! I can really feel the momentum.

If you are on the fence about going premium and doing the boot-camp, then I suggest you just do it.

Just do it!

If you follow the steps, laid out in such a perfect way by Kyle, you really can't loose. I am just an average lady and if I can have success with this anyone can!

It is nice that I get to help people and pay it back as I add another income stream to my other affiliate income. And, my Jaaxy income is growing as well.

Currently, I have over 10 streams of income. I love it!

~Wendy

You said you had always heard that because of the high competition it would be difficult to make money in the make money online niche. So what did you do different? I'm going premium and just starting the AB course and excited about it. But making money online seems like an impossible niche, curious to hear from you :)

True that there's a lot of competition and a lot of noise in that niche. Frankly, you're not likely to find a niche that doesn't have a lot of competition. And if you do, it could be because THAT niche is hard to make money in. You do have to have a strategy to attract traffic. You do have to find ways to stand out. But you need to be prepared to do that anyway.

Here's some positives about the MMOL niche:

1. It's a rabid market, which means driving the right traffic to the product, with the right message will result in lots of sales, both front end and back end. It also means that your customer's appitite is insatiatble, so as long as you're delivering value, the customer will buy over and over, which is where the real profit is in business...creating customers for life.

2. Profit margins for information products is insane, so commissions are typically much higher than with physical products. The norm is 50%, and it can go higher.

3. There are typically more upsell opportunities with information products, which normally increases your commissions.

4. Since MMOL is an emotional buy, you have a great opportunity to build strong relationships with your customers. More than information, they're looking for a trusted guide. Fulfilling that role is not only very satisfying, it is financially rewarding as well...big time.

5. As you grow in expertise, you'll want to start creating your own products, rather than just affiliating. (Actually, you'll want to do both.) Creating an info product is cheaper, easier and faster than most physical products, with basically no risk. I was at a seminar once where the speaker asked me to come up with a coaching program to offer to the students. I asked her when did she want me to present it. She laughed and said in 45 minutes. We sold 53 units at $1,000 each. In other words, we created $53,000 out of thin air selling a program we just came up with 45 minutes ago.

Don't expect that to happen very often. But you can generate income at will once you gain experience and build a loyal following.

Good luck!

Gordan left you a great response below. But what works is finding a much more targeted niche within the market. For example, some niche ideas for making money online could be frustrated network marketers, work at home moms, unemployed folks, retired folks. I hope this helps.

Great tips Wendy. Early on I am already targeting fellow office workers who are trapped and struggling in the rat race. I hope this can be a viable niche for me because I can relate on it so much. I am really inspired by your success stories.

Wendy, I agree completely that you have to niche down with MMOL, as well as any market. I my case, I focused on real estate investing products, both creating products and affiliating with others. Then I discovered that IM people and REI people had the same dreams, desires and hot buttons, so I moved into that as well.

You can also segment the way you suggested, in terms of targeting newbies or people in different situations.

And you concentrate (become the expert) in various verticals within the bigger niche. You can concentrate on affiliate marketing, content marketing, traffic, software, and on and on.

Finally, I created a very unique brand and style. I became a "category of one." I found what people hated about my competition and became the opposite. That is huge!

Just went Premium. Quick question... are you saying that you have recruited people to WA and earned money doing it?
Reply
TheOldSilly Premium
the short answer is yes. But make sure you are using your personal Affiliate link, so prospects who sign up from your site are credited to you.

Thank you. Not sure what you mean about "using your personal affiliate link". Can you clarify for me?) I'm following you for obvious reasons... experienced, knowledgeable teammate!

LOL, I'm still a newbie, close to 3 months in now, but I do know a few things by now. If you go to your profile on WA, right under your picture are two buttons, one blue that says "Actions" and is a drop down menu, and right next to it is a white button that says "Affiliate Link" -

Click on that, and your personal WA Affiliate link will show. Copy that, and when you want to link a word or phrase in a post or page on your website, highlight the word or phrase, then click above in your editor on the "insert/edit link" button, and paste your Affiliate link into the URL target line. I always check the "open in a new window" box too, so people don't wander off and never return to my site.

Then click the blue "Insert Link" and close the box. Now when people click on that word or phrase, e.g.: Get a Free Website Here! - or whatever, they will be taken to a WA sign-up capture page, and if they join as a Premium you get paid a commission.

Just curious, you do not have to answer... I came on board to learn about internet marketing, but now I see a lot of activity around promoting WA. Are people here to sell WA or to drive their own websites?
Reply
TheOldSilly Premium
Both options are available to you. I have one site that is a WA promoting/recruiting site, and another site that is a niche that promotes and sells ethnic foods, recipes, ingredients, and cookwares.

Wow, that's just awesome! And three months is not a long time to be successful with Bootcamp! :) I actually started my Bootcamp WA site in March 2014 and so far, I've had two sign ups (which I am still thrilled about!), but no premium upgrades, yet. I guess I need to wait until Google gives my website more love.
All the best for you & keep up the great work, Vanessa :)

I was feeling the same way...I would get a sign up, then the next month another signup...it felt slow, but each month it grew just a bit more. It seemed like everyone else on the bootcamp was getting results but I soon started to see results. What I learned is, to just trust that if you keep posting quality content, you will start getting results. Some of us are slower than others.

This is encouraging. Can I ask how long it took before you got your first WA sale? I've been going at it for about 2 months now and am half way through Course 4. I just got my first referral yesterday bit still no sales.

Just waiting patiently (read impatiently) for that first conversion to go through!

Nice down to earth piece Wendy. You are a straight shooter and say it like it is. I remember running into your Affiliate Marketing for Dummies site about a year ago. It seemed very sincere and helped me reconsider my notion to give up on finding an honest and honorable home business model to follow. Seems like you are doing well ... congratulations.

I am intrigued. Like you at first, I have been thinking that working in my own niche is more than enough if I want to succeed. I am concerned that following many leads would have me heading nowhere, especially because the website I am working on is kind of a big project that requires all of my free time and a lot of writing. How did you cope with the Bootcamp on top of everything else?
Reply
wendyk Premium
I only went through the boot-camp course late at night when my house was quiet...or early morning before the day job. And I would write my posts on my days off just like I do with my other niches. I respond to comments, network and social media when I can.
