Learn a new language with Duolingo

Last Update: June 07, 2017

If you find learning a new language a little frustrating...there's a new app that makes it relatively painless. I've been using it for a few days and thought I'd share because learning a new language is difficult. I also know there are a lot of people on WA that would like to learn English.

I'm committed to improving my fluency in Spanish because yo habló Español poquito, and I live and work in primarily Latino communities. I also signed on for a much needed trip through France in the summer of 2018 -

J'ai besoin d'apprendre le français!

I am currently working on basic French with the app. It is relatively painless for someone who does not have a lot of confidence in their pronunciation of French words.

A friend suggested the smartphone app called DuoLingo last week. It's amazing. I'm using the free version because I don't mind the occasional ad. It is structured really well to learn the basics in 5 minutes a day. It's fun like WA but for language instead of marketing. I like it because it forces you to write, speak and listen to the new language.

So, if you've been wanting to learn a new language, there's no reason to put it off any longer.

Hello Wendy
Thank you for this blog,
It just so happens that I have been wanting to learn Spanish as my ancestors were Spanish,

My Surname De La Cruz, means "of the cross" in Spanish, thank you for sharing, I downloaded the app to my mobile and will begin the lessons forthwith.

All the best
Gary

Good luck with it - it's a great app and should really help. I navigate my neighborhood pretty well with the Spanish I've picked up - but attaining true fluency is hard. Here's to both of us succeeding in Spanish. ;-)

Thanks Wendy. My Mom told me about it too but when I checked out the app on my android phone I only seemed to be able to find the English version. Are you using iPhone or Android?

I have an Android. You might want to check back on the app. They upgrade them constantly. Or check Google Play store for other versions.

Wow! I'm impressed. I am very intimidated by languages with with different symbols for letters. So anyone who can master Chinese and Vietnamese is awfully smart. :-)
