I'm Not sure What's Going On...

I had my sites moved to the new servers and I have noticed that my Updraft Plus backups fail at about 30 seconds. Now I'm just assuming it's related to the move but I can't be sure.

Before I take my findings/assumptions to Site Support, I wanted to reach out and see if anyone else was noticing backup failures too.

So, I just wanted to update everyone...

I'm not sure why but, if I just let it run, it does eventually finish the upload. It may take several hours but it does complete. I'm just used to it taking a only few minutes.

Several hours? The only thing that takes me any time is the upload to dropbox (20 mins max).

That's why I was worried but it appears it does complete. It seems to slow down at about 50% during the upload and then just hangs. I thought it was failing but, If I just leave it, it will eventually finish.

Do you experience any other delays when you upload, or just from that plugin?

That's the only one I use that uploads anything. I've tried different online storage options so it's not Google Drive.

Hi Scott,
I have not had any problems backing up my site. I use UpdraftPlus - Backup/Restore which I see you seem to be using also.
Lot of great comments from Tmgreen.

Best wishes Scott,
Michael

Ok on the old servers, although on a different note have been told that I should ask to get changed to the new servers so will ask you about that at a later date.

Good luck resolving

I'm on the new servers, have been for over a month. UpdraftPlus runs fine.

Do manual backups fail?

Also make sure DISABLE_WP_CRON (in wp-config.php) is set to false.

Yes..it seems to die at 30 seconds each time. This is on multiple sites too. I even changed from Dropbox to Google Drive just to rule out my cloud storage as the cause.

I'll double-check the cron setting.

Cron wouldn't affect a manual backup, just scheduled ones.

I just went and performed a manual backup on my website that is on the new server platform and it ran fine. I use Google Drive for mine.

Is it generating a log file? That would be the first thing I'd look at, if you have one. Aside from that, is there some other common denominator like a recently installed or updated plugin?

Maybe look at the advanced tools tab in Updraft and look at your site information and if anything looks amiss. You should be running PHP 7.2 on the new servers.

Really curious to find what your issue is.

I turned off all plugins on both sites, except for Updraft and ran the backups. They both seem to hang at 32 seconds, during the upload phase. See attached images:

Here's something you could try. Go to the Setting Tab, scroll all the way down to Show Expert Settings, then "Split archives every:" and change that to 50mb, then run your backup manually. That will break down into smaller chunks, and there will just be more files. If it still seems to hang, leave it running for awhile and see if it ever completes.

If that doesn't help, see if you can get the Server Support guys to see what the actual backup process is doing. Is it timing out or getting killed off maybe?

Another thought. Perhaps your two sites are on the same server, and that server has some issues?

Hi Michael,
Not sure if I have done this. I am on the new servers. How would I go about making sure.

Thank you,
Michael

Just check your PHP version. If you're on the new servers it will be 7.2, old is 5.x. If you use Updraft, it will show you PHP version under UpdraftPlus Site Settings. Otherwise, there is a ShowPHPVersion plugin you can install that will do it as well.

Hi Michael, thank you so much. I sent a ticket to site support and the illustrated to me that I have the PHP 7.2. But when I look elsewhere it states performance issues...should upgrade PHP to 7.2. I will install the plugin and do a re-check. All is working on my site except mobile speeds.

Thanks very much Michael.

Best wishes,
Michael

I have noticed but I thought it was because to much website traffic some times it works and other times it doesn't .

Thanks,
Are you on the new servers or older (i.e. do you have the Kraken or EWWW plugin)?
