Many people have a tough time choosing a domain name so I wanted to create a discussion where people could get help and feedback on their domain ideas. Before you post your domain or ask for help though, I just want to give you some insight into choose a domain.

First, where do you buy a domain name?

I highly recommend that you buy your domains from the SiteDomains platform right here within Wealthy Affiliate. We offer one of the most sophisticated, advanced, and user friendly domain registration processes on the world.

To access the SIteDomains platform, you simply click on the SiteRubix menu and you will see the SiteDomains button directly within the menu (as shown below).

===> Access the SiteDomains platform here!

Within the SiteDomains you will be able to search domains to see if they are available and it will help you come up with ideas.

There is no setting up of "nameservers" required. Everything is done automatically for you, and we include absolutely every domain feature possible (including whois privacy) with every domain purchase.

What type of domain should you buy?

I personally recommend that you buy a .com domain if you can find one that you like. If you cannot find one, the second best TLD (Top Level Domain) is a .org or a .net. Aim for a .com though, they indicate to search engines that you are the "brand" owner and you will always achieve the best results if you can find one to your liking.

The reason this is so important is that as you build out content on your website, you will be able to rank easier under your target keywords. More rankings equate to more traffic (and opportunity).

How do I choose a domain name?

There are two different types of domain names, keyword rich and brandable. People get too caught up in trying to find a domain with a keyword in it.

An example of this would be:

BestDietsToLoseWeight.com

Sure this is fine and this would be OK within the dieting niche, but you absolutely do not need a keyword within your domain name to rank well. In fact, often times if you focus too much on trying to stuff a keyword within your domain name, you will end up with a brand that comes across as very awkward.

It is your content that is going to rank in Google and other search engines, so having a keyword in your domain may help for that one keyword, but there are MILLIONS of keywords out there remember.

So a brandable domain would work just as well and sometimes even better because it is more memorable.

WeightLossPros.com

Or...

WeightLossWithKyle.com

Those are not targeting keywords per se, but they are very brandable and will work out just fine.

The key is to make your domain relevant to your niche and it should make sense to people coming to your website. People do remember domains and search engines do

The niche I chose is "beginner's fitness". I've been involved in different aspects of health and fitness since I was young, and have even acted as a personal trainer for some friends and family who wanted to get started with an exercise routine. Looking around online at the available workout programs, the vast majority of them are offering "one-size-fits-all" programs that are virtually useless for the beginner, but their sales pitch makes them sound like the best thing ever. Does honestfitnessadvice.com sound like the way to go for this?

As long as you are Honest. . . Be up front and let people know that there is no one size fits all . . . find ways to educate people about themselves with in their body types and health concerns. If they feel your sincerity, they will read on and maybe even follow. . .

That's what I was hoping to build. Too many of the available programs out there focus on people who have a fair amount of experience with fitness already. But what about those people who have never really thought about it before, and now realize that they need to lose weight? Or want to get in shape and don't know where to start? I haven't seen, in all my searching, any programs out there that teach people how to ease into a fitness routine so they can actually stick to it instead of getting frustrated and quitting. That's what I want to offer.

Hello Everyone, okay, so my niche right now is Early Childhood Development and my current site name is Earlychildhooddevelopment.siterubix.com (very long...lol) but this will not be my only niche although I plan to develop other sites under my brand. I would actually like my brand to be my name ArkitaMarie (I am my brand...lol) so do I keep it as my name by itself or should I have my name and add something along with the it like ArkitaMarie talks Childcare? Or would it be that I would keep my name as my Domain name and use "ArkitaMarie talks Childcare" as my website title??

I prefer the shorter the better - so I would just stick to your name because you are free to brand it how you like and then in the subtitle I would use a keyword phrase. (You'll probably get several different answers here - but I am not a fan of long domain names.nor keyword specific ones.

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to see if my domain name is catchy and would work well for my reviews site. nufsedreviews.com will be reviews of everything and anything that people buy or are looking to buy. I'm a beginner so I'm trying to learn as much as possible, Thanks.

Well being that i am a hairstylist and own my own private studio i was wondering if I should use my salon name for the domain name i have not gotten a site together for my salon and it's been three years talk about not being computer savvy ugh....salon name is Voguish Mane and I know and love my field of work so my starting niche will be in the field of hair care or of the sort any ideas would love some feedback from someone with more experience! Thank you all

voguishmane.com is available in SiteRubix SiteDomain. You can use that domain name.

It depends on what you want to do with the site. If you want to use the site to promote your hair studio while offering advice and products to potential clients, then it would be perfect to use your salon name.
However, if you are creating a business that is gonna focus on a particular product or tool then you may want a different domain name for that niche.

just my thoughts on this...hope it helps

Using a .com would be better than a .org so I would go with either the first or the third. I kinda like the first one myself

.org is traditionally reserved for not for profit or charitable organizations.

.com is most popular

I am working on a personal project where I highlight local artist and their work. I purchased the domain name DreamersView.com for this project a couple month ago from GoDaddy. I have not done much with it so far being that I am not computer savy.
This is yet another reason why I am so excited about Wealthy Affiliate. For from here, I am learning how to do web sites. And in that light, I wish to promote the brand further by complementing the two.
I am thinking of the domain DreamersViewMoney.com for my WA promotional site. A spin off for the Crafts market could be DreamersViewCrafts.com. This theme could carry over to other niches and so on. "DreamersView" will be my brand.
Any thoughts and advise?

My question is: should I drop the goodbyecity when I switch to my very own domain?

My niche is crafts. Crafts as gifts or décor. I use to sell my handmade greeting cards at my sisters massage shop and went with the brand RenaVia Reflections. My daughters are Serena and Alyvia, creating RenaVia. When you make something by hand, or take time to find a unique gift, it is a reflection of ones self, or thoughts.....as Serena and Alyvia are a reflection of me.

That is how I viewed my branded name and I was wondering if you find that fitting as my domain name for my site that will provide tutorials on craft gifts and/or decorations.

Or should I have it be something like RenaVia Craft Cave, RenaVia Crafts, RenaVia Décor & More, RenaVia.......

Hi I have a subdomain handmadecarpets.siterubix.com, which is one niche for physical products for which I am developing content, with a view to going live shortly. I have in mind other physical hand made products such as italian shoes and silver jewellery, for which I think i need separate niche domain names. Is it possible/desirable to combine them in one online store?

I have another domain called alpusonline.com, which i intend to develop for selling online educational, and software products.

I think I should keep the two domains totally separate (physical products and educational/software products), because they are targeting totally different groups of customers, niches.

I would welcome any thoughts or comments from more experienced marketers, on how best to set things up?
Thanks
Alan

Hi,

You are on the right track. You should keep the websites separate as you stated. The only time to keep them together is if the products of both are in the same niche. Based on your description they are not. So, having two different domains is excellent. I would have done the same.

As to the targeting of groups, you must decide if both products can be used by both groups. If so, target them. You don't want to leave out any potential traffic to your sites. The more customers can lead to more sales. Target as many groups as you can.

Otherwise, keep up the good work. Thank you for sharing with the WA community.

Best wishes,

George

You need to go to click on the site rubix button, hit site manager and log into into your new domain as admin. From here, click on the pages tab and find your privacy policy. You can then click edit on this page to change the privacy policy's url to your new one.

I'm not sure of what my "niche" should be? For the past 23 years I was involved in vehicle sales. 21 of those years, I sold Acura products. Consumers, for years have turned to the internet to obtain a deal (they think)). on the vehicle of their choice. Bottom line, I don't see "sales on line," as being a lucrative way to go. I am however, open to any ideas my fellow WH members have.

you are displaying expertise in at least 3 areas in the little paragraph above - vehicle sales, acura products, and in particular being able to guide consumers.

You know they are looking online, so it is up to you to creatively think how to best share your wisdom and knowledge and experience with these new buyers in a way that helps them and also pays you, and that could be varied, for example:

- do any of these areas have affiliate programs?
OR
- could you see yourself writing content on what you know and enjoy about vehicle sales and acura products, gaining that traffic while at the same time being an affiliate for other programs like auto accessories - many areas in the niche will have affiliate programs for sure

Hello Guys, I have a domain already called urpotential.co.za Does it matter that it is a .co.za domain, does it have to be a .com?

Then I have another problem, The concept I have in mind is a central place for people to come to to get help in three different areas of life :

1. Mental empowerment
2. Health, wealth and weight loss
3. Gaining financial and time freedom.

At first I thought of running these three concepts on the one website. The name of the website can mean You Are Portential or it could mean Your Potential.

Now I am not so sure if I should combine all three into one website, or make each a niche on its own like I did with the free website we built fromt the first course http://ketoweightloss.siterubix.com. and have three seperate websites.

What do you guys think will work better? In two minds now.

I also have another domain called BetterBiz.co.za. Does this sound like a good space to promote WA affiliate program?
Reply
MyGrowthHack Premium
Hey Marius,

On the first question, it should not matter what TLD you use. It can be .com or any other one.

The other question I start to think more and more that creating separate websites is better. This way you can more narrowly define your audience and are you able to find more keywords to create content for. Especially if you want to run paid programs, it makes sense.

My 2 cents.

Good luck!

Can't a person have more than 1 website under 1 domain. My niche is going to be and my website is ProfessionalScrubs.com. The domain I find is Professional-Scrubs.com. I am thinking that if I wanted to expand on this idea I could put more than 1 website under the same domain.
Reply
amyr2017 Premium
Hi Linda -- if I understand what you are asking, you can only have one domain name PER website. You can host more than one website with the same hosting company, but you can only have one domain name per website. The domain name is the name of your website.
http://Professionalscrubs.com is related to only ONE website.
IF you want to expand on that niche, you can do another website with another domain name, and link them both together with cross-links and stuff like that.

So, you can only have one blue Toyota with the VIN ending in 2345. If you want to buy another blue Toyota, you can, but it will have a different VIN, ending in 5678.
Bad example, maybe, but I hope this helps!

You can create subdomains off of a main domain, ie. maternity.professionalscrubs.com which would then be a separate website. It's the same principle that all the free siterubix subdomain websites run on here at WA.

However, normally I'd only suggest doing that if you are going to be creating the same site in more than one language, ie. en.fotolia.com (English), es.fotolia.com (Spanish), etc.

Your domain name doesn't have to have anything to do with what the website is about. I think that's a good idea.
As long as you put a description in about what the website is, people looking for those items will find it.

I agree. It is the content withing you website that counts not your domain name that much. it can even be hdc.com

Ok thanks, i got confussed becauce in the first lesson's they talk about your niche and your domain name having keywords. I had another idea with the gotta-hav-it.com so can i use this domain name with any other websites or will it be just for this one?

Thanks for the idea about the domain name, i'll go check it out and see what i can find with it.

Google will rank your content not your domain name

There are two different types of domain names, keyword rich and brandable. We sometimes get too caught up trying to find a domain with a keyword in it.as you absolutely do not need a keyword within your domain name. More importantly, you build content on your website which is what's going to rank in Google and other search engines. So having a keyword in your domain may help for that one keyword only.

Hi there, thank you for the great advice, for a niche area (to start), I thought of - olive oil - a site that looks at the health benefits of olive oil, looks at the different types, and different flavours etc- my suggested domain name is ' I love olive oil' , I would welcome feedback please, thank you!

If that domain name is available, I would go for it! That's to the point and heck, I love olive oil, too! Best wishes on your success. :)

My site is going to be a multipurpose site. One of my passions is grilling and another is easy listening music hence the domain name musicallydelicious.com. You need a name domain or web that will interact with one or more niches in order to broaden your base and increase your revenue. I hope to have my domain and my website posted by the weekend. It should be interesting as to the comments that I receive. I go with versatility.

That's a great name but I'm not sure that combining your niches is such a great idea. I'm confused already, and by combining them, I think you diminish and water down the value that each niche provides on it's own. What are you going to say about grilling that has to do with music? What does easy listening have to do with grilling? Maybe I'm wrong, but --- I'd be interested to see the site when it is done...!

I have always liked easy listening music whenever I cook. It helps to relax and to create an intimate atmosphere. Both together can be very create an open atmosphere where you are open to more possibilities.
Thanks for the comment,

You never know where something like this will go. They would have to pay high royalty for the title and any content they used. I would not be opposed. I am going to be adding 2 recipes to my sight as an example on how to Thrill for the Grill.

I already purchased my domain, but I'm curious what you all think. I'm trying to develop a portfolio as a travel writer, while also gaining credibility as a gemstone collector, and using the site to promote mining companies' products and "pay-to-play" mining experiences, as well as some exceptionally valuable gemstones in a featured collection. The URL is gemstonejournalist.com. I don't have any content posted yet, but I am working on a number of articles at this time.

Reply

Gemstone Journalist shows up as: avg <10, traffic <10, QSR 17. So the website url is not the greatest as a keyword, but without saying what, I have found more than 5 terms for blog titles that have an avg of >10,000 (one > 37,000) and a QSR of less than 100, in many cases less than a dozen. I do believe I have also coined the term "Gemstone Journalist" whereas every site that shows up on a Google search for it seems to be rather unrelated. I think I may have found the right niche for myself.

I had purchased a domain name before completing Course 1. I chose tricialou.com because I wanted a more personal branding. My site is a rustic wedding site that I intend on blogging through my personal journey while planning my own wedding at the same time. My idea is that as I find fun new items I can blog about them and promote them at the same time.

I am an Energy supply (Electric and Gas) Consultant and want to get the best domain... It is a business where Customers Save Money and Consultants Make Money. The following is what comes to mind... Please give me you honest feedback.

1) How to make and save money - Competition QSR 100 & searches 40
2) Save your energy bill - QSR 48 & searches 142
3) Electricity bill too high - QSR 99 & Searches 48
4)Why is my electricity bill so high QSR 46 & searches 80
5) become energy consultant QSR 5 & searches 56
6)How to become energy consultant QSR 2 & searches 56

In consideration to the above I am leaning towards... a domain like howtobecomeenergyconsultant.com

Please you thoughts?

I like that idea, but what if you added 'an' to make it read easier...so it would be howtobecomeanenergyconsultant.com.
Reply

Thank you for you feed back. I have already bought the domain already to make a change with "an". It reads how-to-become-energy-consultant.com. This has a QSR 2 and search 56! I will tailor my content to such and see what happens next. Thank you once more.

Hello everyone. My niche is hiking/nature. Basically different outdoor adventures in California... and elsewhere as my site grows. And some product reviews as well like backpacks and and other gear that correlates with the area/activity. I had a few name ideas, but they've all been taken. And the alternatives were not all that great. Any ideas/suggestions greatly appreciated :)

ok, I need some opinions on my domain name.
My niche is personal and home care products that are a good value and are environmentally friendly.
I was planning to use the name A Little Bit Greener, but the .com is not available. I did type www.alittlebitgreener.com into the address bar and Google search and nothing came up, so it doesn't appear to be in use. I also tried to get www.littlebitgreener.com without the A, but that is not available.

Both are available for .org and .net

My other idea is One Step Greener, which is available as a .com.

What are your opinions? is www.onestepgreener.com user-friendly and memorable? Or should I just go with .net?

Or do you have any different name suggestions?

Hello goaloptions! For the best step-by-step tutorial that will show you how to transfer your domains into WA's system, please take a look at this awesome video created by Marion Black. I have 3 domains on GoDaddy and this video explained everything I needed to do to successfully transfer everything over.

Hi everyone. After reading some of the posts here I think it would be good to have my own domain name. My goal is to sell products on amazon and the site I have started is solargadgets@siterubix.com I plan to later on sell other products besides solar. I thought about coxscoolgadgets.com for a domain name. What do you guys think?

Both sound fine, but have you considered setting up two sites? One for each? You can add the second later on as you get the first up and running.

Hi everyone,

I have two questions and l hope they come across clearly. If not please do let me know so that l can try to rephrase.

1. My URL is naturalremedies.siterubix.com and my desired brand name is PickBuyClick, now will it be possible for me to promote my brand name on a different worded domain?

2. Where can l find suggestions for Brand names?
Reply
JanetMoore Premium
My very first thought is PickBuyClick what?

My second thought is are you thinking Brand = site name?
Reply
Labman Premium
Relevance is key. Promoting PickBuyClick on a site for natural remedies is not relevant to the concept.

Promote natural remedies on one site and affiliate marketing or MMO on another site.

One site at a time. If you try to do more things everything suffers.

Okay, I thought I like the first domain name I chose. Oh, Oh--what in the world was I thinking--I wasn't. So I created my first free site with the wrong one. I got to thinking, what would draw me to that site or article if I were searching? I looked at it from the audience's perspective and knew just the type of domain name would grab their attention.

I am on the lesson about buying a domain name. My website is focused on pets. I am having trouble figuring out how specific I should be. I want to use a name that is pets in general in order to have several different avenues with pets. I'm not sure if I just need to stick with something more specific such as dog training as opposed to different types of pet products. Any assistance on this would be great. Thanks.
Reply
phildora Premium
You could choose a domain name for pets in general. Then when you start to develop the content for your pet site, Here is where you can add the specifics for your pets categories. Also on the Home Pages navigation bar, you can have your specific Pages, for example-pet training, pet care, pet shampoos, etc. Hope this helps.

Yes I already brought a domain also and have transferred it over to WA... well nearly. I see the last step I need to do in the Domains manager then it's done. Looks very easy.

But for this exercise, or even further down the track, should we want to build more sites, do we purchase each site from WA that we build here? Or are they free? Or just free to build?
Reply
FTurner8032 Premium
You can purchase here or somewhere else and transfer the hosting. It is a little cleaner if you purchase here and any cost differences are not worth worrying about;.

Building here is free. You can host 25 sites with the siterubix attachment and 25 of your own domain names, so up to 50 all for the same price of only $49 per month. You will not find a better deal anywhere on the internet.

Ok, here is a tip everyone! If you see the domain name you want has already been taken, look it up and check it out! There's a good chance you can use that site later on as a comparative and get some ideas from their categories and blogs for relevant content ideas on your website : )
