Hi,

I added a contact form on my author website, but so far the only messages I have received were religious messages, promotions for some weird stuff, and just spam in general ... How can I avoid that? It gets irritating after a while. I don't think a CAPTCHA box is going to help much if people type in these messages ... Any suggestions or advice?

One of the best ways to do this is through the blacklisting facility built into WordPress.

The way this is done is to open your NotePad on Windows; you then copy the IP addresses of your wonderful spammers one address per line.
In other words, one address then carriage return, another address, etc.
You can also blacklist certain words that seem to keep popping up one per line.
You then copy that list, go to your WordPress Dashboard, go to Settings, Discussion, and on the bottom of Discussion you will see the Blacklist Box called "Comment Blacklist"
Just paste all the IP addresses and individual words or phrases you want to block into there and voila!

The problem with plugins is that they can block comments you might want.
The problem with Captchas is they annoy your commenters.

Hope this helps.

Dave.

I get spam/scam messages all the time on my site through my emails as its listed in the privacy page I think. I do not have an author box or CAPTCHA. I still get them regardless. I do what wdcope said, “delete.” I get robo calls also on my mobile phone even use a call spam/ scam filter and robo call blocker, not even that works. I get them at least 2 or 3 times a day. Its very annoying. I do not answer the phone because I cant hear but I know it is those annoying robo scammer calls. I have to put block on every robo calls that comes through and even spam filter cant block it. Its an awful problem but that is what I and many others have to do these days. Just have to do them, there is an email blocker that I use. I input those email in that and automatically it will never come through again. Most what I get are basically scams or ads that look like scam. Also they are funny looking too. English writing is horrible. Most people can think of one specific country where the scams started but now its all over the world. I am sorry to inform you that nothing will help except to delete, put block on email blocker list, and move on.

I wish it was only 2-3 annoying robo calls a day, Brenda. I get about 15-20--usually two or three times from the same source. Even though I block the numbers, these calls seem to circumvent the block! I feel your pain!

Thank you, Brenda. I'll just keep on deleting those messages. Maybe I can add a CAPTCHA, although I don't think it'll make a big difference and I don't like CAPTCHA, but I can try ;-)

There isn't much you can do about people who leave crazy stuff in your contact form if they are using a real email address. You can however find a plug in that will help you block this kind of each nutty thing after it has occurred once. Just go to website management>then to the appropriate website>to plugins> add new> type in block or blocker into the search bar. See if you can find a plugin that meets your needs.

Thank you, I'll see what I can find. There may be some plug in that can help.

You can add a box to sort out robots from real persons, yet I still get a few here and there to delete. I will watch to see if anyone has a better solution.
