Hi,

I'm not sure yet, but I may create a subdomain for an existing website I have. I have never done that before and I don't know how a subdomain is linked to a website and if/how website visitors can see it's a subdomain. My question is: can it have a different name or must it be the same or a related name?

For example, if my website is called AllaboutDogs and I add a subdomain about accessories such as leashes and collars, can the subdomain be called LeashesandCollars or does it have to be "AllaboutDogs/Leashesand Collars?

Thanks in advance!

I'm not quite sure what you mean Christine. But you should try n keep your domain name as relevant to the site title as you can as people are more likely to find it that way.

Hi

For example if a corporate site wants a blog added to their corporate id or an ecommece shop.

blog.domainname.com
shop.domainname.com

AllaboutDogs/LeashesandCollars is a subfolder vs a subdomain which WA don't do.

Perhaps go for

https://accessories.AllaboutDogs.com or something else.

A subdomain would be a completely new website independent of the main site.

Yes, it's completely new and it's independent of the main site, but it's in the same niche, which is why I thought that a subdomain would be a good idea. I don't know if it should be a subdomain or a new website, I'll read the info some people shared here as well.

Once you build your site, you can link it to your main if you like via a menu item as you say it is in the same niche.

Have you thought about scaling your current niche into an additional subcategory instead This way you'd benefit from the combined SEO vs starting new with a subdomain; just an idea may be worth figuring out.

Hi Abie,

A sub category would still be on my main website or how would that work?

I would create a category and add it to my menu, then assign posts to the category, so when a visitor clicks on that specific category they can see all posts in relation.
