Gone For 3 Weeks From Nerve Pain

Last Update: June 23, 2021

Howdy WA Friends!

As of today, I've been gone for just over 3 weeks and it was not by my own choice. Before this incident, I had gone through every post on my site except for one, but I couldn't continue. Something happened that prevented me from moving forward with my intended plans.

In my past, I've dealt with Carpal Tunnel before, while it can be painful I knew how to alleviate the pain to keep it at bay. Then a few years ago, I was told I had developed Tech Neck, which I had no clue that was actually a thing, but I found out that it certainly is.

Both conditions deal with nerve pain that can be quite painful, however, I wasn't experiencing either of these issues 3 weeks ago when I abruptly had to stop what I was doing. It was a Friday evening and I did some WA training and then continued working on one of my posts.

Here's what happened; in between working on my sites, WA, and online in general, I try to take several breaks throughout the day. Doing this helps take my mind to places other than working on here and it provides stretching, walking, and at least some minimal exercise.

In my shop, I tinker with a lot of projects, some big and some small, but I'm always doing something. This time I was tearing apart a riding mower I picked up from a friend, I had no intention of fixing the mower, I just wanted to part it out and make a few extra bucks.

Not my first rodeo, I've been doing this stuff for years. I sell the small stuff through eBay and the bigger parts on Craigslist. This mower had a 46" mowing deck in decent shape, but the engine wasn't running, so I started to take it all apart.

That's when I found several bolts that were not budging, so I sprayed PB Blaster on them and let them soak for a bit. When I had come back I was surprised that they still wouldn't budge, so I decided to persuade them with a bigger socket set.

I believe these bolts were installed using an impact driver, but I got them out with my bigger ratchet set and it was not that tough to do. That was after using everything I had with the small socket set that wouldn't budge them at all.

Once I had them out I called it a night and went back to my computer to work on my posts again. After about an hour I started noticing slight pain in my neck and shoulder that ended at my right arm muscle.

Within a few more hours the pain was so intense I couldn't think straight, it was constant non-stop. There was no way I could do anything at all and the pain was getting more intense as time moved forward.

While giving it everything to loosen those bolts I had unknowingly torn a muscle in my neck/shoulder area which pinched a nerve in my neck. Everything is still as it was that night, both in my shop and online here, I've been gone for 3 weeks.

I couldn't get any good rest and the first two weeks were incessant non-stop searing pain that I used Ibuprophen and Lidocaine to treat. Neck and shoulder massages with Lidocaine showed I had developed a knot in the area, it was the pinched nerve I guess.

Through daily Lidocaine massages and pain relievers, it's slowly fading, not quite gone. This last week I was able to concentrate and I felt ready, but I held off. There's no way I want to aggravate that injury again. It's worse than any Carpal or Tech Neck I've ever experienced.

So today is the day I decided to return to finish what I started with my site posts. I plan to continue with my online business plans and I'm leaving the mower for some later time. I've missed being in WA for the last 3 weeks, but I plan to be here for many more years.

Despite having been in the top 50 when this occurred I was shocked to see I'm still in the top 100 after 3 weeks of being gone. Now it's time for me to get back to work and see what I can do to write some more good content.

Hope everyone is doing well.

John

Hi John, welcome back. Sorry to hear about your nerve pain, I too suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome. I take supplements like magnesium, turmeric curcumin, and Zakolta. These are all anti-inflammatories and when it comes to pain it is caused by nerve damage along with inflammation I have not used it but the research that CBD oils can be helpful. I hope it legal where ever you are. Please take it easy on yourself and avoid over-exertion.

Best wishes,

Michael

Thanks, Michael, I am taking things slow for now that's for sure.
I take daily vitamin supplements and that helps, but I am looking into the CBD as I have family members in that business.
As each day passes the pain is becoming less and less as I heal.
What I have to get in my head is that I can't do the things I could do when I was younger. In my head I can still do everything, in reality, I can't do what I once was able to do.
This was a lesson learned.

Hi John, as we grow older there are a few things that we used to do that are kind of hard to do now. Just take it easy and allow the healing process to continue. A hard lesson to learn indeed.

Welcome back, and hope you feel better. Have you tried CBD oil for treatment? It's worth a shot

I haven't yet, but I may try it in the near future, I have family in that business. I'm healing along well at the moment and I hope it stays that way. I'm avoiding over-stressing and steering clear of physical work which I love doing. So far so good, I'm taking things slow for now and continuing at a slower pace as well.

I could not imagine being in constant pain over the last three weeks. What do you usually do to mitigate the onset of your neck and wrist pain? With so many of us at the computer I am sure your experience would be useful. Certainly for me.

There are several things I do including taking Ibuprophen to reduce swelling and inflammation. I do stretching and spend less time working where I have to use a mouse, mousepad, or gaming controller.

Since discovering both Carpal and Tech Neck I've changed some bad online habits like slouching, my neck angle to the screen, and the position of my keyboard. My posture has improved.

I hate having to take anything for pain, but I do have a prescription for Tramadol, but I only take it when absolutely needed.

I can usually feel my neck and shoulders start to tense beforehand, that's when I go do something else for a while rather than aggravate the situation.

Never had I had a situation like this one before, it was pretty crazy.

Grab a dose of CBD oil, about 1000 mg bottle. Works wonders and comes with a 60 day money back guarantee. Can't go wrong.
Would I steer. You wrong Hugh?

Good advice. Do you usually also use a hand support? Like those songy pads to support your wrist

I haven't used any device yet, but I may in the future. I do have a special foam bar to use that's made for keyboards, but it doesn't work for when I'm on my laptop. However, despite having issues with carpal wrist in the past, it's not an issue now. Everything is centralized to the neck, spine, and shoulder, it's faint now in comparison to what it had been. I'm taking it very slow for now. As miloncashgal mentioned, I may try CBD in the future.
