Who moved my cheese?

Just recently my daughter and I went to a large flea market at one of the local churches and one corner was all books. As my daughter browsed and picked up several, this little one caught my eye “Who Moved My Cheese” by Spencer Johnson, Md. I read this book several years ago but something made me pick it up and purchase it for the big sum of 25 cents. It looked very new. I couldn’t wait to get home and read it again.

I can’t think of a better book to read if you are part of the Wealthy Affiliate network. The message is so simple and yet so profound. You can read this book in one sitting in less than an hour, or stretch it over a couple of days and really absorb the message.

The cheese is just a metaphor for whatever it is you desire in life – a good relationship, a career, money or something else. And sometimes when you go looking for that cheese, unexpected changes occur and you have to decide how you are going to deal with that change, like the 4 characters in the book.

When I first joined WA barely 3 months ago, making money was definitely on my mind. Unrealistic expectations were at play; I was going to see some of that money right away!

Having gone through most of the initial training and gearing up for Boot Camp, I have done a complete 360. I now realize that it will take me 3 to 12 months to make any money and you know what? I am ok with that. Doing the lessons slowly but methodically has taught me that I have so much more to gain than if I just tried to breeze through them.

Yes, someone keeps moving my cheese – unexpected interruptions to my training, putting my money elsewhere besides WA, sometimes not even getting to my laptop a day or two at a time, family commitments – but I know that I can always find new cheese, that I need to be able to adapt to the unexpected, that life really is a bowl of pits at times.

Throughout the book, you will find blocks of cheese such as this one:

Like the characters in the book, I am learning to be stronger, to take small leaps, to get out of my comfort zone (and I know once I start Boot Camp, my comfort zone is going to be tested a lot!). The four characters in the book are Sniff, Scurry, Hem and Haw. I won’t tell you more about them, except I would like to think I am a bit like Haw.

I still consider myself a newbie and for all you other newbies out there, I encourage you to look for more cheese when someone moves yours. Don’t give up! Accept change and deal with it. With each step I take, I am more determined than ever to keep going. So what is the main message this little book gives you?

Has someone moved your cheese while you have been a member here? Have you had to deal with an unexpected change and did you ignore it, hoping it would go away or did you face it?

Hi, Thanks for your insight and for sharing. I had that same mentality when I joined. My goal was to be set up in 3 months and rolling along. But you are correct, the more realistic goals have settled in and I am okay with them too. I will add this book to my reading list. All the best to you.

Thanks Pam and likewise - all the best!

I meant to blog on this topic many times Mary Ann and forgot about it. The cheese has been moved so many times in WA it has another layer of holes in it!

Definitely Swiss cheese! I was expecting someone else to write about it but I took a chance that maybe no one had, at least recently :).

I love this!! and it resonates with me in soooo many ways. Realistic expectations, as we adapt and grow with the various changes that occur in our lives, is key in moving forward and seeing a consistent level of progesss and Yes! SUCCESS!

Thanks. I so agree with you on all counts!

Many thanks for this reminder Mary Ann.
I have read that book, but I must dig it out and read it again :)

I know. I am sure that I will read it again in the not too distant future! I never thought to check to see if it is available for Kindle or Kobo. I believe the first time I read it was from the local library.

I would imagine it is still for sale :)

Love this because my cheese moves all the time! If there’s one thing I’ve learned here at WA Is to roll with it and find a new piece if need be. Thanks for a super post!
Sydney

You are welcome Sydney. Yes, WA is the perfect place to apply the lessons from this book.

Wow, I read that book years ago. It was a mandatory read at the company I was employed. Good stuff from what I remember.

Apparently it was read by many companies. Mandatory, huh?

Yes it was.

I have never read that book, but I feel as if you wrote my exact thoughts. Thank you for sharing. My cheese has been moving constantly. And sometimes it makes me want to take a break before I should - knowing full well that if I take a break, I may not come back because of the inevitable distractions. Sometimes I feel bad because I haven't started earning those monthly premium fees back. I feel like I'm taking money from my family that could be used for something else. But, my belief in this program is so sincere and solid, and I'm so grateful for it. Overall I see it as the best God-sent investment of my life, but when my cheese getsta moving, I start second guessing it. Thank you again for your words. I know in my head and heart that I am not the only one, but it's so good to see someone else bear witness.

Congrats on your future success.

Thank you Ashley. Continued success to you too. You are definitely not alone. It is a beautiful day here in my area in Ontario Canada and I so would love to be out sitting on the deck soaking up the sunshine instead of working on a review, which I am not good at :). But that is what we are all working for - sitting out on the deck, or sailing our boat, or travelling! Work and determination will get us there, but I think you already know that :).

How ironic!

I have three copies of this book from a reading group I wanted to start, but I found it hard to get people together to read it with me.

I was cleaning out my bookshelf and listing some books last night on eBay. I listed these books and some others to make room for other books I have in my collection about leadership and building wealth.

I'm keeping a personal copy of this book for reference now that I'm going through a lot of change to adapt to WA lifestyle. I had a friend who asked me if I had read it and it had been a while ago so I need to read it again.

I'm sure it will be relevant and I can relearn some strategies I have forgotten.

All the best,

Louisa

I so agree Louisa. It is a little book that keeps on giving. We all know change is inevitable. It is how we deal with it that matters. I am happy I came across it and will keep this one for sure! I mean, you can't go wrong for 25 cents, lol!

I understand it takes quite a bit of work and dedication to make a decent income with affiliate marketing.

It sure does! We are so lucky to have the tools to get there.

Ha-ha. Excellent. Good to mention this book. I read it several times. Great stuff. It applies to me at the moment. Changes... changes... changes... Sometimes, I am also looking for my cheese... Great post.

Thanks, Nadja3, it is true when they say the only thing constant is change!
