Don't make this Rookie Mistake in Affiliate Marketing

When you first join Wealthy Affiliate you are all gung-ho! You can’t wait to get started on that first website. That was me too! However, since we can buy more than one domain, that’s what I did, right off the bat. Since I bought the domains, I figured I should create the websites. The next thing I knew, I had three websites on the go and that is where I made my ROOKIE mistake.

Unless you have a ton of energy and time, a huge amount of content ideas, an assistant or hired writer, DO NOT create and try to maintain three websites as a newbie.

Two and a half years later, I am struggling with three sites but not prepared to give any of them up due to the amount of time and money I have invested. I am trying to work smarter though, and narrowing my niches down (two of the sites are very broad). This is starting to work for me.

So my advice, for what it’s worth if you are new to Wealthy Affiliate and online marketing, is to buy all the domains you want, BUT only work on one website until it is where you want it to be. I wish I had done this! There are just so many hours in the day; compound this with a family or a full-time job and you could easily get burned out.

Have you made this rookie mistake and are you paying the consequences?

We've bought several domain names, but focused on one and made that one successful before moving on to the next one. The subsequent sites benefitted from the knowledge gained by perfecting the first; otherwise you may just be repeating the same mistakes over and over and over again.

You don't have to let the other two sites go, but maybe pick the one that's doing the best and move forward there until it's solidly established, then move on to the second and third?

Sounds like a plan :).

Thanks.

Absolutely! Only worse thing for me was coming across those internet deals for unlimited hosting...so cheap domains and the ability to launch not just 3...but AS MANY as my over-excited gung-ho attitude and creativity could make-up as i went along. So the good news is that 3 YEARS LATER - i have finally scratched all of the non-sense and only focusing on my main ecommerce site and my blog. WA has been a key component in my ability to correct my path finally...the amount of knowledge here is what makes this the community that it is!

Perfect Agustin! Sounds like you found the sweet spot! Thanks for sharing.

Mary Ann,

Been there...........and still doing it!

I have 12 active domain names, but I concentrate on only one at the present time. And that is where some sales are made.

Other domains that I devote time to are about camping and that is a seasonal thing. And having devoted 2 years of research on camping facilities in my area, I have little need to update even when the seasons are in full swing. I did the initial work and it pretty much stays the same.

I have the luxury of time on my side. That helps to maintain my interest in the income-producing website.

Whatever your websites are about, I am sure that you will narrow down your time and activity to the one or two that pique your interest and goals in due time.

Best of wishes for a prosperous future!

Hi Eric, sounds like you chose the smart way :). I have a travel website and it is way too broad! After two years, I finally figured out what I should concentrate on (it was there all the time but I did not want to see it. Now I am looking at it in a different way and actually coming up with topics to write about! Go figure!!

I have 13 domains and would like to offload a couple. It is so easy to look at them and say Gee, these would make great websites, lol but I am not going there - at least not yet!

Thanks for your kind words and best wishes to you as well.
