having a bit of trouble getting my head around key words do they need to be in the title of my web site

You might be getting confused because some people place them in the title if their post (not website) or in the first paragraph. Jim

Hello from Nottingham! You don't need a keyword in the name of your website. They should be used in each of the posts you write. Use one keyword for each post.

Recommended. And in first paragraphs. Then, write naturally. Do not force keywords any more.
Another approach would be to write post on topic, and to have keywords several times in text.
But, follow first advice - this is how WA teaches!
