Windows 10 Scam
Hello everyone. Just wanted to give all my followers a heads up about a scam I think is going around.
I got a phone call this morning from someone claiming to be a technician from Microsoft saying that they had detected some issues with Windows 10 in my computer and they had a fix for me. I never let fit get any further and told him that this was a scam. At this point the person raised their voice and told me that I was not a technician. It was at this point that I hung up the phone.
Two other things about this caused me to think I was right. First...the phone number on my call display was only 4 digits and Second...they never called back to try and convince me I was wrong.
I sent a message to Microsoft concerning this and they called me back and confirmed my suspicions, the main reason being that they didn't have my phone number until I left it on their contact page.
So, there you have it. Heads up.

How can you be sure that it was 'Microsoft' that you were dealing with after you had potentially been 'hacked?'
I spoke with them on the phone. I am sure it was legitimate and they assured me that it was a scam. There was no pressure to have them do a scan of my laptop.
Secondly, I have a very good anti virus protection and firewall so I am confident that I havn't been hacked.

I had a phony IRS call a few months ago, telling me I had 48 hours to pay or else. I reported it to the IRS and they said they never make phone calls they always send letters.
I'm happy to say I don't use Window, so I'd like to see them try it on me!!! So pleased you didn't fall for it :)
I had this happen before and almost got sucked in. Didn't work then, sure ain't going to work now, especially since I talked to Microsoft support. I might be getting older but I'm not getting stupider.
I have heard of it happening before with disastrous results. The content on your computer disappears, and you have to pay them to put it back! Horrible scam!! Good job you avoided it :)
They tried to call me a third time but I rejected it. The number on the call display was 1-9917. Toss it if you see it.
A technician or support help won't raise their voice. And if you hang up, he will phone back, since he phoned you in the first place.
Scammers don't want to be confronted. They are looking for easy prey. Our job is not to be easy prey. And to have a little fun with them. You could always say: 'My house has 16 windows, not 10, I don't think you called the right phone number.'

Thanks for sharing, Wayne, we have so many scams on phone in Singapore too and they target the old folks here, it can be scary. :(
Yes, they do and thanks for your comment. I actually got 5 calls from the same number before they finally gave up. I didn't even give them the satisfaction of answering the phone because now I recognized the number.
Now that the students are going back to school in a couple of more weeks, there are new scams aimed at them. It just never stops.
I think the only way is to be alert, as the great book says Be sober and alert for the evil prowls around, lol. :)
