That's quite a broad question Bruce, and hopefully I've understood the essence of it, because the answer can include mindset or process.

I feel as if you might be asking from a process perspective? Which is where my answer is coming from.

So with that in mind ... in my opinion it comes down to the mastery of two key processes. You can drill down into each to discover where you are in the process and then create a plan that will get you to where you need to be.

1) Traffic - getting visitors coming to your website.
Create lots of content from keyword phrases that you can rank for and that brings your intended audience to your website.

2) Conversion - selling them stuff.
Once your audience arrives to your site, help them to resolve their intended search.

If you focus on mastering those two processes, it will guarantee success.

NOTE: Having said that, there are many different layers to each of those process. For example, Traffic - there's keyword research, content creation, etc etc. For Conversions - there's finding your writing "voice", understanding the mindset of your audience, what are their want's and needs etc.
