i sumbit my sitemap and its giving me an error say Your Sitemap appears to be an HTML page. Please use a supported sitemap format instead.

I have looked for advise here with no help. I have searched google with answers about uploading a new sitemap to my domain root folder. I don't want to mess anything up here.

If anyone has any help or can walk me through this process that would be wonderful.

Thanks,

Todd

If you use Google XML Sitemaps plugin, go to WMT > Sitemaps (on the left and enter sitemap.xml. URL not needed. That's it

Did you use the sitemap plugin at WP? Those seem to work well.

It should look like this: your domain/site.xml

Well Steve, I took your suggestion. It verified that site.xml like you suggested and it tested correctly. Then I went to submit. It stated it was verified, I then looked at the link and it send pending with a 404 error. So not sure if it's submitted correctly or not. But I really appreciate your help. Thanks

If they said it was verified then it should be. 404 errors are pretty common and they claim that doesn't necessarily hurt your site's performance. Are the 404 errors associated with certain pages or posts?

If you are using google xml sitemap plugin, then update it because they have changed something recently. Before they use to create one complete xml file but now they split them in many files according to posts and categories. Then try to create your sitemap manually by licking that manual sitemap link in the plugin. Then if you visit the plugin you will see all those files. Just copy and paste them in google webmaster tool to verify.

I faced the same issue few days before but now working fine.

Hi chhikara, I have Version 4.0.7. There is no update options that I'm seeing. In the version I have it's supposed to update posts and pages. Do you know what the most recent xml version you are using. Thanks for your time and assistance.

Hi Steve, I'm not sure where to find that info on 404 errors associated with my posts or pages. Is that in Google Analytics or WMT's?
Thanks for your help.

Hi Steve,
I have about 15 404 errors. After reading here at WA, I think it's because i change my posts/pages at times either by changing content or the title. I'm looking for how to fix this, but not finding anything really helpful. Do you have any ideas. Sorry for taking your time man. Thanks

If you change the title, you need to go Webmaster Tools first and REMOVE URL AND CACHE of the old URL first.
Then you can go back and FETCH AS GOOGLE with the new URL

Hi John, thanks for the info on changing titles. I'm using XML. I verified my sitemap with WMT's. But then got the 404 error, so I'm not sure if WMT's is able to utilize my sitemap. Ahh, confusion. Thanks for you help. Todd
