Do you check your links frequently to see if they are still good?

I just completed a post in which I brought up 6 ancient posts that had links to good products, and put them all together. I'm really glad I did, as it took me all morning yesterday to get that post ready.

I discovered that many of my links were no longer good. On two posts, I had a company who removed my link and put up a link that led to a general information page on their company. On another, I'd listed 10 puzzles, and the company only carried three of them at present.

I also discovered that Amazon had the most reliable links. They were all still good. One link had been changed to another product because the one I'd listed was no longer available. However, there was still a link.

If the link is still there, just changed, I'm not sure doing a dead link check would catch it. Does anyone know? I need to do a dead link check next.

Anyway, here's a heads up...check those old posts to see if they are still valid.

Hi Fran, somewhere down the line I got involved with a free membership with the "SEMrush Team". Every week they send me a report as far as how my site is doing. They also indicate the posts with either internal or external broken links, plus a few other things.

Thanks for the heads up.

I find this helpful as I can keep everything updated.

Best wishes,
Michael

Yeah, I have been doing the same thing, slowly cleaning up stuff. I found a coulple of dead or removed links.
Great idea.

There is a plugin https://en-gb.wordpress.org/plugins/broken-link-checker/ which will do it for you Fran

Oh, I have an excellent broken link checker. Didn't use it before doing the post because I just wanted to use six posts. However, if the link is still there but just different than the one I entered, will the broken link checker even catch it? Guess I'll find out soon...

Hey Catherine,

Using any broken link checker on WA hosted websites will cause havoc to your website.

The only sites I use such a plugin on are sites hosted anywhere else.

It seems the level of security somehow interferes with how the broken link checker plugin works and it will report EVERY link on your website as being broken.

That's why Loes' created the following tutorial:

I don't host here, but thanks for the headsup

Triblu, I have used a broken link checker and it doesn't report all my links as being broken. However, what I've used is not a plugin. Does that make a difference?

Yes you must have been using an online link checker

I've used an online link checker and also an app called "Inspyder" that did a great job. The latter belonged to a friend, but have been thinking of getting one for myself.

Yes, it makes a difference, as mentioned in my comment.
Plugin does not work on WA hosted websites, thus Loes' suggested alternative in her tutorial linked above.
