How to narrow down micro niche in Photography?

Hi everyone,

I had a bit of shut down lately. This summer looked like we have to explore and try everything that was on standby for last year and a half because of COVID-19.

New passion - photography

We have been visiting beautiful places. We took our DSLR camera and phones with us. There was a lot of talking and discussion, what makes beautiful photography.

So I started thinking - it would be good for me to start writing some of this knowledge down, using pen and paper or computer.

New idea - start a blog

Well - why not? I already have a blog. I have some knowledge on how to write good posts that rank.

I have a blog on embroidery, where I scratch a bit of product photography. But this blog should cover other aspects of photography.

And - as we all know - more writing makes you better and faster at writing posts.

New knowledge - start with microniche

But - since I have joined WA, I have learned that it is easier to start a blog that does not cover all different areas of the wide fields of photography.

My main goal is to provide adventurous beginners and intermediate photographers with more knowledge and tricks on how to improve their photos with phone/DSLR cameras.

HELP ME narrow down

I am currently struggling with making a decision on micro-niche. Well, I also wish to be profitable microniche in long term - of course. We all do. So this is my dilemma - which micro-niche to select that is not over-saturated.

I am not a professional photographer and there is plenty of people that want to sell their photos and make a living by selling them.

Thank you

Thank you all for your suggestions and experience in narrowing down fresh ideas. I am hoping for an even more successful year together with the WA community :)

why not update to the newer phonetography (is that a word)
with the newer mobiles having multiple lenses and higher mp sensors hte images are becoming harder to beat with bridge cameras...
yes dslrs still do it. but can you carry one of those in your back pocket with the power to zoom in and also do macro...
if you do go for dslr then it will be the 'hard core' so planning expeditions... how to get the shot you want ( where will the sun be at the time i want it) so how to read the lanscape so you don't waste the day and can enjoy the journey to get to being in the right place for hte shot...
maybe also stick with one type of photography...wildlife, landscape, portrait, architecture. to start with....
but olympus are no more, ok they have become oms but it is not the same company.. so is it the downward trend for dslrs...
good luck
phil

Hey Vesna,

I know absolutely nothing about photography.

In fact, I thought DSLR was a train, so I had to look up what it was, LOL.

So, I went to Google and did my usual thing.

Find out what questions people are asking.

I've included a few screenshots below.

This can also give you an idea about a specific microniche by having a look through these screenshots.

You can also check out the following website, created by Jim Harmer, who actually went on to create an Internet Marketing platform, one that rivals Wealthy Afiliate (ssshhh, don't tell Kyle, he'll throw me out, LOL).

https://improvephotography.com/

He spent his early years just going through Google Autosuggest and finding questions to answer.

His site now has over 4,000 articles, but if you scroll to the bottom of the home page and go back to page 419, and then work your way forwards.

This will show what he was writing in the early years of the website, so lots of Google Autosuggest questions.

Once again, hopefully this can give you an idea of what you'd like to write about.

Rather than focusing on money or earning potential (although any type of photography has earning potential, even teaching people how to take photos of their babies), try to find something that really resonates with you.

Just looking through some of the searches below there's a huge number of microniches (I even went as far as checking, "How to Take Photos of ey" - Can you believe how many different questions there are about taking photos of eyebrows, eyelashes, eyelash extensions, etc? Hahaha).

As I say, have a look through some of the screenshots below, and also get onto Google yourself and see what people are searching for.

Hope that helps.

Partha

really sounds like you are a project24'er rather than a wa'er Partha...
each article is sounding more like an ad for project24...

Nope, you can be both PHILIP!! LOL.

Although, I am steering away from P24.

I'm much more a fan of John Dykstra and Morten Storgaard.

For me, they've absolutely nailed it.

not heard of them .. will look them up ...
you lost confidence since Jim left

A little bit, but also the fact that even while he was still here, they suddenly decided that a specific keyword tool may help.

Oh look, it happens to be a keyword tool that they have an affiliation with and are selling. Hmmm...

I think we have to remember no matter who or what you follow, WA, P24, Gael (AH), John, or Morten (or all of them in my case, LOL), they are all business people.

So, as much as they ALL wish to help their followers and members as much as possible, they also want to turn a profit.

I just felt P24 "sold out" a little.

i think i missed that bit ... i went through the blogging course before the update and sort of pick and choose nowadays...
sort of follow their earlier method...but bit of a mix of styles...
also use andy williams tool for finding the common words from the top 10 for a keyword...web content studio...
but as you say they are in business to make money... the main way you make money is to make a course like they have...so go from a user( consumer) to a creator...
i will have to go back and rewatch .. i think i am still a member....

thank you very much for all the screenshots :) I just love looking at them and seeing how you do your magic :)
I still need to read 2 of your posts - because you have so much good advice that you share :)
someone gave me a tip - bring a hot cup of coffee and start reading Partha's post :) The best advice ever :)

As a photographer that loves taking road trips, with both a DSLR camera and my cell phone, I wondered the same thing.

What I came up with may or may not be what you are looking for in an answer, but here goes anyway.

What is your most favorite part of photography?
That is the real question.

There are many categories within the photography niche:
B&W
Color
Slides/film/Digital
Types of cameras, \\best phone cameras

then you have your prints, where do you print your photos?
Printer or send them out to a service (there are many to choose from that have affiliate programs.

Why do you like photography?

By asking yourself some of these questions, will hopefully lead to other aspects that you may not have considered before.

I KNOW it seems like an uphill battle, but don't look at other hills to climb, set your foundation with one brick at a time...you will get there!

Rudy

Thank you for your time :)

I like photography because I 'catch' memories :) Then I can look at them later :)

That's my problem - I like road trip photography - when I am on a road trip with my family.

I like product photography - to show my embroidery products.

I am not interested in baby and/or pet and/or wedding photography - well, that helps to take out some of micro-niches...

I rarely print out my photos. I may print for gifts or calendars.

Thank you for helping me think :) I am open for more questions to ask myself :)

If you have a blog on photography, I would love to leave you a comment :)

Vesna

I considered doing a photo blog, but got overwhelmed with the possibilities...grin

Did you happen to watch the 14 day training we just had? I recommend that you watch #1 on niches. Jay shows his method of narrowing down the niches to find one that works.

I'm glad my suggestions helped you to think of more things, and I appreciate you wanting to leave a commenton my blog, had I had one.

Check out that video, I think it will help you to understand how to find the niche.

Rudy

I will check it out, thank you very much for your suggestion :)
