Why was the internet invented
Why was the internet invented
It was invented for people to communicate, regardless where, geographically, in the world, they lived.
It allows flexible cooperation among disparate groups.
The groups can form quickly, as and when needed, and solve problems. Then they become individuals again.
The speed and fluidity groups form is the key to the success.
Large groups form to decide on strategies and policies and small groups form to solve detailed challenges.
Hey!
Did I just describe WA?
This is what the internet enables: large self-supporting communities.

Invented not by Al Gore but by DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency)in 1977! to facilitate military communication. Took off like wildfire in the commercial arena in the 1990's
Incredible how some of the early experiences now appear so archaic.
I guess it must have been highly secret in its early military form.
The internet has come a long way...I remember back in 1993 when I first connected with the Internet. We were using tools like Telnet, FTP, and Gopher and we were charged access by the minute, through a 56k modem at a whopping 5 kilobyte per second. Lol
I still remember the old ' boing... boing.. Ksssshhhhhh..' As the 56k modem connected. Although my connection was often 28k at best. :-)

You took a little bit of liberty with that description, but it is essentially what you described.
