Impossible Test
Impossible Test
Can You Do the Impossible?
Canute Could Turn Back the Tide.
Well, he thought he could. He decided to test it.
1,000 years ago and the English King believed he was so powerful he could turn back the tide.
He got very wet.
At least he tried.
Bosham (Pronounced “Bozum”)
It is believed the place he attempted to prove his invincibility was near an old church in Bosham. It lies on the South coast of England.
We visited the church and the beautiful village around it.
It is still relatively unspoiled and quintessentially English.
The Bayeux Tapestry certainly shows the church so it is rooted in English history.
Mill Stream
There is a mill-pond and stream running through the village which was once failed for its oysters.
King Canute’s young daughter is believed to have died in the mill-stream and been buried in the church.
Children were paddling and looking for crabs as the tide rolled in and crept up the main street.
What were we thinking of?
We did not give the internet more than a passing thought.
Tongue in Cheek
It is thought that Canute’s attempt to turn back the tide was a display to persuade people that Kings were not infallible.
He went on to rule several Scandinavian countries, so he was really a very smart cookie.
Sometimes we do have to test ideas though.

You'll never know what you can accomplish if you don't try. Canute was willing to die trying. I believe in taking risks, but not sure I'd go that far. When I was younger, I may have, but I didn't know my goals or priorities. Youth is often wasted on the young.
Thanks Hal. Not sure that level of risk is worth it either.
Guess we become better at risk assessment as we mature.

Funny, I just saw a reference to this yesterday!
Thanks Jessica.
strange coincidence.
He is rooted in English history although he was actually Danish.
The Danes ruled a large chunk of North and central England at the time.
