Good Camera for YouTube Videos

Making a short educational film for YouTube and I wondered if the best setup was to use the built-in webcam and microphone on a laptop or is it better to use discrete, separate components?

There is not a lot of setting up to do when you use the built in camera but the sound is sometimes a bit rough and you are limited in the direction and angle of the camera angle.

I have separate components for the desktop: a separate webcam and an independent condenser microphone. This setup does produce a better quality sound but getting all the settings right and physically setting everything up is time consuming.

I do like “press-button” electronics where there is little to adjust.

Any tips or recommendations gratefully accepted.

Thanks for sharing this post with us, Peony! Your setup is fine. It was the right decision not to use the build in devices, but to go for independent tools. Therefore having better audio and video quality. The best place to make a record (don't laugh) is in the wardrobe. It will give you the perfect attenuation. If you can't do it in the wardrobe, do it in the sleeping room. The worst place to do it would be the bathroom or the kitchen.

Thanks Eric. Will have to give that a try.
Attenuation. Is that to do with the loss in volume, quality or certain frequencies?

Big rooms with little furniture have the tendency to sound hollow. Sometimes you even have an echo. Therefore to get a good sound you need to have something, which absorbs (attenuate) this hollow sound or echo. That is why theatres always use seats with fabric coating and not leather.

Thanks Eric. Yes I remember visiting a professional recording studio for a radio station.
Your voice died as soon as you spoke. Weird sensation.

I know that feeling. When in my 20th I worked for a company building radio and TV studios.

Great question. I am interested in the answers too!

Thank you for asking this one.

Susan

Sometimes people read but have no direct answers.
We are not all experts in all areas.

Thanks for sharing, Peony.

Thanks for reading Roger.

Wait to see if there are other suggestions

Thanks Beth. Hoping for some others experiences.

I would stick with the condenser microphone for sound quality Peony, it may require more tweaks but is worth it.

Thanks Kaju. It certainly has the edge on the on-board one on the web-cam.
