What are values? What are rules? Without reading this post, give me your opinion in a few words :) No peeking!!

So, after taking a class on Discipline with Dignity, I have refreshed my views on what Rules and Values are. Before I continue, this is not only for teachers, it's also for parents and everyone in general because knowledge is always GOOD!!

I will give you my definition of these two concepts that are connected, especially in a classroom.

A rule is an action that we must follow. A value is the reason why we must follow a rule.

For example: We do not have to run a red light (this is the rule). The value related to this rule is that "if we run a red light, we may hurt others". Indirectly, we are practicing love for others. Obviously, this is just one example but I'm sure you get the point.

Rules without values are vague and may lead to people asking "why do I have to do that?". Rules and values should be taught and learned simultaneously in order to improve our behavior.

IF we can develop a mindset where we have rules WITH VALUES, we can become better people. Better people with create better families. Better families will lead to a better society.

The rule that I try to follow is to treat others in the manner and way which I would want to be treated. I measure most things by that and act accordingly.

Great #1 rule! of course, we can't go by only one rule.
Thank you for your comment :)

Rules can be right and wrong depending on what context you are seeing them and your perception.
Values generally have a moral tag attached to it or benefits which is not bent one way or the other like rules.
If we look at the legal system as an example, it's always evolving.
Compare this with your moral values and you will see that it's remained intact throughout human development.
Just a little nonsense from me but I hope there is something in it.
Just read your definition, I like it.
The most important rule to follow is to develop an understanding that everything is one (1). The linked value is to expand your thinking and discover that we know nothing (0).

Best regards
