This is for the owners/admins/graphics team. Can we have a micro-button that fits in the header, please? So we can link to WA with a little thing on the right top of our pages

Hi everyone, thanks for your suggestions. What I want to do is have a small but not "tiny" image of the WA logo - to promote like "proudly hosted by WA"....just so I have an additional link there. I already have the 125x125 button as a widget. And one of the banners on my about page.

But I'm brainstorming how to promote WA myself, and this was one 'jumping off point' I thought of.

My theme DOES support images in the header, they show up on the right hand side, balanced against the site title/tagline (which is on the left).

I have considered reducing image size - or cropping part of an existing button - but wondered if there was a more 'official' one available.

Like a school emblem type of thing???

Thank you. I really like your idea. Anything linking to WA and also making our site more user friendly has to be a good idea.

Bear in mind it's not always easy to insert stuff in the header. Sidebars and footers are easy as they're 'widgetised' headers aren't.

Most themes will support a logo & a banner ad in the header. But adding a small button in there and aligning it easy isn't easy. It's something that will vary from theme to theme.

There isn't one simple solution that would work on every theme.

sounds good.

If I understand you. You need a button the same as you have only smaller. Could you just reduce the one you have and save it as a new image. I'd use adobe illustrator. If you point me in the direction of the image you have and how big you want it I'm happy to do it for you.

How small of an image are you shooting for? Would you just want the letters "WA" on it or would you want to include some additional text? There will definitely be a trade-off between the size of the button and the amount of text that you can put on it to keep it readable.

The smallest banner on the Affiliate banners page is 125 pixels square. It contains the text "Make Money TODAY!" and "Wealthy Affiliate University" above and below the WA logo. It's just barely still readable when it's reduced to 50 pixels square.

Hey Vicki!
... you talking about youtube, or your own website, or your posts etc.
Should be easy enough to do:
Just make a small image and link it - maybe I don't understand your question fully.
Joanne

Haven't seen one yet, but I like the idea a lot!

Don't guess I ever saw one.

No - I mean that I want to have a small button to put in my Site header(s) that links to my WA account.
All the banners are too big - the buttons are fine for sidebars, but I need a little one to put in my header so people can click on it and get sent here.

I mean the ones on the right of my header look here http://tinyurl.com/prq9vgx

Never saw it, you mean as on your youtube channel?

Yesterday I made a blog and referenced a document that i have on my hard-drive. I don't see where to upload it to share in my PM outbox. Can anyone guide me, please?

Can't help Vicki, but looks like you have several answers.
Have a great day.............Frank

Ok, got it! Thanks for your help, all.

Okay - think I got it! I'll test it here in a sec.

I want to place a link to the .docx in a PM outbox. So I can share the file with people asking me for it.

You could upload to your website using ftp ( filezilla ) and the logins supplied in your siterubxi area. Then just place a link to it in the blog or
article

I have no experience working with Dropbox or Cloud sharing. :(

Dropbox is really easy I use it all the time

Upload it to some cloud service for file sharing and then share a link.

Think you'll have to either upload it to your site and send a link to it from there. Or upload to Dropbox, for example, and share that download link with people - which would be the better option

Hi IMc. Frank here. I noticed you were recommending "Dropbox" to Vicki. I have never used "Dropbox" or ftp. What is the difference and is one easier to use than the other?
Thanks Frank

I'm noticing on other people's websites that they have disclosures about ads - don't we need to do that? It's not covered in the training that I've seen.

Hi Vicki,
Thank you for asking the question, unfortunately, I don't know the answer for sure. Not only that, but it may differ in the US from the UK. I have said that I am an affiliate on my "About" page, but not sure whether that is considered adequate, even though I feel it is. I don't claim that my site is a review site and I don't compare hovercraft, I only discuss one craft and explain it's virtues.
Logically, as mine is a .com, (not a .org), I would expect visitors to my site to use their common sense, but common sense and the law are often barely on nodding terms, lol!
All the best,
Brandon

PS I have just looked up the link Carla posted to Leo's training, i.e.: https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/leoemery/blog/affiliate-earnings-disclaimer-copy
I think it may be just the job!
Brandon

Thanks for bringing this topic up Vicki--IMPORTANT!!

http://www.ftc.gov/sites/default/files/attachments/press-releases/ftc-staff-revises-online-advertising-disclosure-guidelines/130312dotcomdisclosures.pdf

It's really long...
FTC requires that you do disclose your affiliate relationship. It also goes further to say you can't just put the disclosure somewhere obscure like buried in privacy policy. It has to be visible to somewhere when they are reading. It has a lot of great information.

I will also ad that there is NO fine if you do not disclose affiliate agreements. I just read this yesterday.

Thank you Josh and Tim. I will add something to my sites. Better to be safe........

Thank you Josh.
All the best,
Brandon

My personal feeling is it's a good idea. It is strongly suggested by the FTC. Neil has a good post on the subject here https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/neil-little/blog/affiliate-disclosures-and-the-ftc-do-i-need-one

Yes this is a good post. It sums up exactly what I read yesterday and tells you the exact guidelines to follow.

I think it's safe to have an affiliate disclosure plus, if you're an Amazon affiliate, they require it.

I sent Nathaniell a note about this to get a definite answer one way or the other. As I stated, I would think such a serious issue would be a training one. If this is something that MUST be added in the Privacy Policy again, covered in training?

This is from Leo Emery, who is an excellent marketer and trainer. I used his examples to craft one for my sites. https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/leoemery/blog/affiliate-earnings-disclaimer-copy

Good idea!

Thank you Carla, it looks just the job to me! (That said I have no legal training whatsoever!)

Brandon

Disclosure on ads? What type of ads? Since when? That's news to me! I'm with Loes on this one. This should be covered under affiliate partnership...???

it's in your privacy policy. or at least that's where I always put mine.

I think that's neccesairy when you sell products of your own, if you are only functioning as a bridge between costummer and retailler as affiliate partner, you can't be hold resonsible,

I am curious how others think about this.

I think it is mandatory now, it wasn't I think it is now however here is Kyle's training https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/training/how-to-create-a-privacy-policy-page-on-your-website
my view would be it is better to be safe than sorry

I just copied the privacy policy from the course, that does the job?

I agree.

I read a post that it was mandatory, that's why I put it on my site. I can't remember who wrote it though. :)

I would think this would be a major component of training if this is true.

Well that's what I thought but put it in there anyway to be safe!
This was the post I read https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/neil-little/blog/affiliate-disclosures-and-the-ftc-do-i-need-one

Hi Vicki. :) I'm pretty sure the FTC rules say that we are suppose to put disclosures on ads if we are being compensated for the content we have written about.
I don't know if we can be fined or not, but I'm glad you brought it up. Michelle

The homepage loads, but the menu tabs don't load quickly, did I break my site? I really need some help with this, please. Second day now.

happy all is A1 again!

Its seems you went happy fingers with your plug-ins, hey, I did too at the beginning just to see what they do but then deactivated them. Just testing the waters. Good though you sorted everything out good luck.

Good deal, all sorted out looks like. :)

oh yeah - and I need to do a backup, too - then I'm going to sit in front of the fire and space out while Mr B58 watches football. :)

YAY!!! Carla, you are a jewel. Between you and Support Staff (ticket submitted), I discovered it WAS the plug-ins. THANK YOU!!!!

Did removing the plugin sort it out?

Support actually deactivated ALL of my plug-ins, and got speed back up. So, I went in and activated only the ones I need to use right now - it hadn't occured to me to Deactivate the ones I only use once in a while (like SEO redirect), which is what I added yesterday.

Ugh. THANKS, GUYS!

Yay!

What have you changed between the time it worked and the time it didn't work, Vicki? New plug-ins? They are usually a big culprit in when things don't work.

I was fighting with sharing links. I did deactivate one of them, and adjust another one - had both running, and duplicate buttons - now it's cleaned up. I don't have that many plugins, though - an Email Subscribers, SEO Optimizer, (Hmmmm!!! Maybe that's the culprit!). I'll deactivate and see if that helps. THANK YOU.

It was the SEO Redirection plugin, I'm almost SURE! But, I did get my triplicate share buttons sorted out, and since I did all the redirects yesterday, I don't need to activate SEO Redirect. Hopefully ever again. But I haven't deleted it.

I did delete entirely one of the social sharing plug-ins, though.

Okay. Good. You only need one set of social share plugins. I deactivate while I am trying something new and then I delete the one I won't be using. Plug-ins are wonderful, but they can get you, too.

I followed Kyle's instructions for "quick and dirty" backup of my files, and exported my site contents to my laptop and a flash drive. Then today I went to "look" at them (like

If you really want to look a an .xml file you can open it in Microsoft Excel or OpenOffice.org Calc (free). If your website crashes then use Tools-> Import-> WordPress.

Wealthy Affiliate keeps regular backups of everyone's websites that are hosted here.

If you are not using WA hosting and you have access to a cPanel hosting service then you can use WordPress Database Backup plugin to be doubly sure of backing up your website. You can then restore using the instructions here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Restoring_Your_Database_From_Backup ~Marion

If you import your site to another host, you have to get anothe plugin anyway!

The XML site map is for bots, ( do you know what to do with it?) all in one seo feature manager generates it AND submits it to google bing yahoo! All you need to do is write content, goto the plugin, generate site map! In the little window it says " successfully notified ....) or ( failed to notify blah!) hope this helps!

Try using BackWPup in the plugins in WordPress, this has options to set up your back up when and where you want it saved.
Kim :))

Kim, I downloaded the BackWPup plugin. I can see it in my WP toolbar. I keep pressing a button to Save Changes, but nothing happens.
In Jobs it says, "The HTTP response test get an error "couldn't connect to host"
Any idea what's happening?

I found a video, it didn't help. I'm still getting the same message.
http://youtu.be/vF3MBdtQLWc

Maybe I'm scheduled for Sun 3AM I don't know.

Okay,

I just tried mine and it worked fine. You may want to just deactivate the plug in and delete it, then download again, an then activate and see if that solves the problem.

Sometimes you never know if there are some programs being ran by the source that creates a bad connection. If all else fails, deactivate, uninstall....etc..Some things can just be going on when you do these things that you are not aware of.

Kim :))

Thanks Kim, I think I'm going to wait until tomorrow to see if it backs up on schedule like it's supposed to. If not I'll do as you suggest and uninstall.

Okay, hope it does. Mine came up and said run and it was done. Let me know how it works out. :))

Well Kim, I uninstalled and reinstalled and I still get the same error message.
"The HTTP response test get an error "couldn't connect to host"
There's no Support on their website for the free version.
I'm stumped.

Well you still have the option to export it to your computer files, this is in your dashboard. You just have to manually do this on occasion.

I actually also use an outside PC Back up site that charges me 4.97 a month. Which is quite affordable. I just have an older laptop and if it crashes it would be a huge drag for me.

You may want to also check with tech support to see if they know why this is not working.

Have a great Sunday!
Kim :))

I just downloaded the plug in backwpup because I'm lost on that stuff.

Melanie, try this video, see if it helps.
http://youtu.be/vF3MBdtQLWc

Thank you ;) As always :)

Okay, guys, I'm not getting this. At all. On Win 8, I scroll through the apps and stuff, but I don't see "Text Editor". And the little dialogue box appears and says "There is no default program to open this type of file". I can't figure out what to do.

The program is called "NotePad".

I don't think it's important to open it a the moment unless you want to change the code. I don't have Windows 8 but if there is a "seach" you should be able to find notepad there.

Vicki, try this video to see if it makes it clearer for you.
http://youtu.be/vF3MBdtQLWc

It was clear to me, it didn't work, but it was crystal clear.

As far as my understanding goes it wont look like your website as it doesn't have the Theme info on it. That's why Kyle says to write down what your theme is in case you break your website. It opens with a browser and you'll see an explanation about the file and then lots of code.
If you break your website you need to use the backup xml file and import it into the theme you were using.
Hope that makes sense!

xml is the file extension that saves you code in both computer and human readable format. Most text editors can open it. Windows 8 should have a text editor - every other version of Windows has had one.

Once you open it, it will just be a long document of code, so unless you need to change the code, I wouldn't open it. It will not look like your website to you.

I can't find the text editor. I've only had Win 8 for a while. Where do I find it and how do I set it as the default to open xml files?

So I don't have Windows 8, but the program you want is NotePad, and here is a video on how to find it.

http://youtu.be/LxeAlaMhT48

Note pad, Microsoft Word, one note, etc. look for app it should already be on computer. If no in the list of apps is where you will find one or more of them. I also know Microsoft Word 2007 is now free and can be downloaded to your computer.

Or IF I need have it openable/functionable on my laptop at all.

Send me your url and I will check it for you and make sure it all opens

http://thenurturedagnostic.com/

I'm just worried that if my personal computer doesn't know how to open it, will it still be good to go if I need to use the backup and upload it to WP.

Oh, do you mean send you the file from my pc? It won't let me copy the url. It won't even show me the url. But the file shows up in my downloads. I just don't know what program I need to have it functional on my computer.

An XML file is just a text file that's written in a special format. The format (and the tags it contains) tells wordpress what to do with the file's contents if you ever need to import it to restore your site. There's usually no need to examine the text contained in it. (Since the file is stored on your computer's hard drive and not on your website, it wouldn't have a URL.)

It all worked good for me!

Thank you all SO MUCH!
