My Thoughts On Grammarly - For What They Are Worth

First of all, a big Thank You to all wonderful WA members who share your experiences, knowledge, encouragement and so much more within our fantastic community, on a daily basis.

Now, with that said, my thanks to those members who have willingly shared their experience with Grammarly. There are far too many members to name, so I will not go down that path in case I miss someone.

My experience with Grammarly was NIL until about 36 hours ago when I hesitantly decided to try this tool simply because I had told a member I would do so. I always like to keep my promises, however large or small the action!!

On the other hand, one aspect of my business is Proofreading and as an experienced and trusted Proofreader I do not depend on tools, but on my knowledge of, and skills within, the English language.

That might sound high and mighty. It is not meant to do so, rather help you understand where I am coming from in terms of producing content.

So, the following is what I found from my trial of Grammarly.

Grammarly and I did not agree on the use of commas. So that remains open for argument!

Grammarly highlights that I use thank you rather than thankyou. I prefer the two words version thank you. So a decision still to be made on that. Do I change or Do I not change. In other words – to be or not to be!!

Grammarly does not like me using Hi as a greeting. I do not hold that against Grammarly. I am not that keen on the use of Hi either, but have not found anything more suitable that sounds friendly and welcoming.

When uploading a recent blog to get feedback from Grammarly, it recommended that I use the word books in place of cooks. Hmm..... I doubt that eleven books could put on their aprons and cook dinners for 70 people. No doubt Grammarly picked up on Books as in Recipe Books, as opposed to Cooks who actually produce the goodies!!!

Grammarly has told me to insert an before argument (see above). I have not done that yet, due to more thought needed on my part. And, with the recommendation of inserting the word an, brings me to what some say about including fluff in our content!

Moving On:

In an effort to be of help the following is my recommendation:

For people who are not confident with the use of correct grammar, Grammarly will assist you.

For people who do NOT have English as their first language, Grammarly will be of great assistance. But, you will need to think carefully about words that Grammarly thinks are wrong for you, as in Grammarly telling me to use books instead of cooks. You can go into your translation dictionary on your cell phone or other media to check the meanings of words you do not know.

I believe Grammarly is tops when it comes to spell-checking content. Not necessarily because our spelling is poor, but because we all make mistakes when typing, no matter how efficient we are.

Most importantly, be aware that when using Grammarly in Microsoft Word the auto-save function is disabled. Remember to Save Your Content regularly!! The last thing anyone needs is to lose their content produced from great thinking and hard work.

My preference is to write the content first. Then upload the saved content and have Grammarly check it. By following that procedure no content should be lost!

Finally, all content should be edited prior to publishing and that is when Grammarly will do the best job for you, in my opinion.

What is your opinion of Grammarly?

Do you love it? Or do you not?

Thank you for reading this blog. Have a fantastic weekend.

Hi Valerie , I am still a keyboard clunker , my typing skills are not the best, so the spell checking aspect of grammarly is a bonus, even so. I still manage to get myself into trouble.
For sure there can be some issues around grammar, but it can help when you are first starting out. Writers probably don't need it because they have things down pat.

Thanks very much Alexander for your comment. I agree there are advantages of using Grammarly and I'm pleased to know that you benefit from its use :)

I have to admit that I haven't used it Valerie as I also proofread and edit as part of my job. From what you've said about it I don't think I will be giving it a go any time soon either! :)

Jude, your blogs are 5 Star Plus, and many more pluses. This tool is not for you!!
Many thanks though for your comment. Much enjoyed and appreciated.

I hope your health is improving and that you have a nice weekend :)

Thanks so much Valerie and to you too :)

I recently came across Grammarly about a week or so ago thanks to helpful WA angels. I have had my share of arguments with it but useful all the same in picking up things that I miss.

Grammarly definitely has its uses Tyrell.

Thanks very much for your response.

Have a nice day :)

Enjoy yours too Valerie

Hello Valerie,
I did not know Grammarly unless a few days ago... for me it's only a help to find the silly mistakes I sometimes make - (I would call them slips of the pen, but I'm not sure if you would use this term ;-) the typical mistakes someone makes when English is not the first language! Getting more proficient I will not use it anymore...
Have a nice day,
Gerlinde

Thanks Gerlinde for your comment.

Grammarly has its place on the internet. I was just highlighting the warnings.

Use Grammarly when you need to, and remember to save your content regularly.

The English language can be a challenge. Don't make it hard for yourself.

I admire all those who learn a second language. I have not done that and often wish I had. It's a bit late for me now!

Enjoy your day.
Valerie

I would never rely on Grammarly 100 %, it's a support, nothing more nothing less...

And it's never too late to learn a language! ;-)

Have a nice day!
Gerlinde

Yes Valerie I find Grammarly to have the same annoying highlights for me too. It is however a clever piece of kit to have as a backup to writing in case we are having a difficult day and feel lazy perhaps :)

True Robin. We need all the help we can get. Like all tools, Grammarly has its good points.

Thanks very much for leaving your comment :)

Thank you Valerie, great info. Based on your input, I agree with what Marion has said. I will nor be trying it. Thank you for saving my time :) Cheers, William.

My pleasure William. I am pleased to be of assistance.

Thank you for your comment. I greatly appreciate it :)

I haven't used Grammarly. I don't intend to try it now that you've pointed out some of the shortcomings.

I use "Hi" as a friendly greeting. "Thank" and "you" are two words ALWAYS.

Thank you for sharing your experiences.

My pleasure Marion.

Thank you for your feedback. I very much appreciate it.

It's great to know we are of a similar view in respect to "Hi" and "thank you".

Enjoy your weekend :)

My opinion is mixed. Tops in grammar and spellchecking. Misses some things on plagiarism checking though.

Thanks for your feedback Michael. I hadn't stopped to think about plagiarism due to trialing it on my own content only!

You have added a very valid point. Thank you.

Great post, Grammarly is a pretty good tool.

Thanks very much Anthony. I appreciate your comment :)

Great of you, Valerie, to bring those points!
I see here the usual pros and cons of an electronic help feature.
I have never used Grammarly myself, and now I have a better picture of what would await me if I chose to do it.

Thank you!

My pleasure Therese. I'm pleased to be of help. Thanks very much for leaving your comment :)
