Locked Out of My Website! How Could that Happen?

Wow, what a fright I experienced yesterday when working on my ten-year-old website. Truth be known, it was more than a fright. It was an absolute horror experience.

Being locked out of my website was scary. But to read the message "No WordPress website installed" seemed impossible.

How Could That Have Happened?

I was updating posts and had been working on the site for a few hours.

Included in a task was inserting links to a new-to-me affiliate programme.

The programme offers four slight adjustments to one of the affiliate links. The adjustments provide different styles of landing/sales page to greet a prospective purchaser.

Wishing to select the landing page considered most appealing, I carefully tried each style by working directly within the 'Insert/edit" link in the WordPress dashboard. (Classic editor, I confess!)

It seemed simple enough when all required of me was to delete five digits and replace them with alternatives. Although a bit fiddly, I didn't expect anything untoward to happen.

By the time I reached the fifth version, it appeared WordPress had experienced enough of my efforts and decided to completely wipe-out the website forever and a day!

On attempting to log in I received the message 'No WordPress website installed'.

I had no idea what I did incorrectly.

Hi Valerie,
True nightmare scenario, I’m with you 😳
You are so right site support are just amazing, these faceless nameless people who every day breath life into our sites, fix a fracture, stitch a cut and talk us off the ledge, to me they are like an emergency service 👍👏👏👏❤️

Thankyou site support whoever you are

Thanks, Cordelia for your response. I love the way you described Site Support. They are everything you say. Owning a website without Site Support being there to deal with site problems is something I couldn't imagine.😊🎇🧡

That is a scary situation. I am happy that you got everything out.

Thanks so much, Jim. It truly was a relief to see the website back to normal thanks to SiteSupport.

Wow, a heart-stopping moment, Valerie, that would be cause for a panic attack. So pleased for you that site support resolved your issues. I have to agree with you. We are so very fortunate to have site support.

I had something similar happen recently as in the disappearing website, almost too embarrassed to mention it. The boy forgot to renew the domain name associated with the site; talk about a newbie error.

Yes, it was cause for panic attack particularly due to not having backed up that website for a while! Not good at all. I wouldn't care to imagine how bad it could have been if the website was hosted elsewhere.

How awful to discover a domain name hadn't been renewed. That would have been scary. I'm so pleased you managed to get it sorted.

Thanks for your response, Alex. Here's to no more panicking moments for a while!

Yes it caused a few headaches, the key is not to panic, and just look for solutions.

Now that's funny Alex hahahaha

Wow sorry that happened. Hope you learned something from it. I am glad the WA people helped to fix the problem.

Thanks for your message, Yirda. Yes, I did learn from it which was that I hadn't backed my website up for a while. However, I didn't need to worry due to Site Support, But regularly backing up our websites is something we should do.

Your experience would be very scary. So glad Site Support was there to help you out.

It was scary and also unbelievable. Just shows what can happen no matter how long one has owned a website. All the more reason to enjoy the benefit of WA hosting!
Thanks for your response, George.
