GDPR Compliance Competed But Feeling Confused

Hi Folks,

I hope you've all recovered from the GDPR experience. I've almost recovered but a little issue continues to bother me, so I thought it best to ask my knowledgeable WA friends your thoughts on this subject.

I know that GDPR compliance is past its demand date. I did complete updating my websites' Privacy Policies but I continue to be dissatisfied with my efforts..

I did not get into the process early, as many WA members did. I could see the activity but knew that Kyle would advise us so I waited for his post, which of course was great.

However, after installing the WP CDPR Compliance plugin I seemed to create an issue, as I thought.

Due to this issue I referred to training from Mary, Marion, Loes, Lauren and other members but I couldn't find a way to deal with what was bothering me.

In the end I looked Jay's privacy policy and saw that his website shows the same thing that I find an issue. This is included below:

If a visitor to the Privacy Policy on one of my websites clicks on the link, they don't go anywhere other than my website. They either go to the Home page, or the Privacy Policy Statement.

So, what is the advantage of the duplicate content created by the WP CDPR Compliance plugin?

If the visitor clicks on the triangular image they can either copy and paste the Policy URL or obtain HTML code. I realize this doesn't cause harm to me or my website, but it seems untidy and unnecessary.

The only way I can find to delete this is to not use the plugin.

If I don't use the plugin, then I don't have a way of including the Data Access Request.

So that is my issue. I haven't read of this being a concern to other members, so maybe I have to live with it!

Last, but certainly not least - THANK YOU to Kyle, Mary, Marion, Loes, Lauren and all the other WA members who contributed training, posts and videos to help us to complete the CDPR Compliance process.

Hi Valerie. This happened to me too. Here is how to correct it. Do not put the url as indicated on the template. Put the name of the website, highlight it and click on that little chain at the top under your title(see below) . In the attachment it is 5th from the left, but in the full picture it is 9th from the left. You will get a box where you will enter your url (copy it from the address box of your website page). Move your mouse away from the box and click.

Thanks very much for your help, Joy. I greatly appreciate it.

You are welcome Valerie J

I've added the EU Cookie Law plug in and I have updated my privacy policy which includes a contact email. So I don't think I need a data request form. What do you think?

Dianne, you do need to have the Data Request form as well as EU Cookie Law.

I haven't done anything on my sites and I will see what will happen to countries out of the European Union.

I thought it necessary for everyone to make their sites compliant as all websites can be seen globally.

I will install it anyway just for compliance.

I think that is very wise Jimmy. It's better to be compliant than not to be. That way you are protecting your website and yourself, as owner of your site.

I have been buzzy with that for past tree months. And it needs some study and research indeed....

Know it applies to all european citizens, unless you exclude them.

Make sure your privacy and cookie policies are set up, telling what you are doing with data and third parties.

In wordpress dashbord>settings>privacy you will find all you need to adapt your current policy. It will automaticly insert third party policies of active plugins. Rewrite. Make page and link to that page...

Look at my trainings... the one about cookie law and cookie plugin. Just install and activate that. Or look at one of my sites, to see how it looks to be compliant for Europe.

This is basic.
For some it will need much more and eventually assistance of lawyers...

Thank you Fleeky.
I have completed the process now on each of my websites.

Valerie, I'm very happy that you sorted
this issue out. I guess every experience is a new
learning.

Very true, Louisa.

It's great that at WA we have members who know the 'techie stuff'.

I'm very grateful to Marion as that problem was driving me crazy. 4 websites with duplicate content wasn't good, in my book.

Many thanks for your comment :)

You're welcome!

Good post Valerie,
I've the same feeling.

Let's wait for our experienced members here.
Cheers!

Thanks H for leaving your comment.

If you follow what Marion has written in her comment below, you'll be able to fix this problem on your site.

I've just fixed one of my sites and will go and do other 3 sites.

I'm working on it, Valerie. I'll publish a new video as soon as it's done.

Actually, I've already addressed that problem in the comments below one of my videos. Of course, that makes it a bit hard to find so I'll repeat it here.

At the bottom of the privacy policy, you'll want to type in https://mymagicalchristmas.com/privacy and then highlight the text and apply a normal text link.

This hiccup seems to be from a recent WordPress update as I've never seen it before. It could be something to do with the preparation for Gutenberg which has a WordPress embed block.

Thanks very much, Marion.

I'm working on it now. The duplicate copy persists. I'll clear the cache and hope that helps.

Just wanted to acknowledge your response.

IT's DONE!

Thanks so much for your help Marion. Wow, the hours wasted! But now I can move forward.

Thank you again :)

YAY! Your Privacy Policy page is fixed.

And now my video is done :)

All is great now Marion. And, I've watched your video.
I was very tempted to send you a PM about the duplicate content, but didn't want to bother you.
Anyway, all's well and ends well :)

You can PM me anytime, Valerie. But if you think your question can help other people then it's a good idea to share.

Very true, Marion.
I definitely agree with that :)

Hi Marion,
This is what is at the bottom of my Privacy Page:

Changes to Our Privacy Policy

We may make changes to our Privacy Policy in the future, however, the most current version of the policy will govern our processing of your personal data and will always be available at the following URL:

Privacy Policy

Should the referenced URL be back to the Privacy Page or should it link back to my website home page where they can access the Privacy Page?

Thanks and sorry if you have already covered this.

Mary Ann

Check out the official Privacy Policy template in Site Content. Kyle links back to the Privacy Policy itself.

Well that's what I thought and it is what I did. Thanks for responding :).

Nice post, Valerie. I didn't see that duplicate content, but maybe I did something wrong. It seemed awfully easy when I followed Kyle's post, and that makes me worry because of everyone's stress about it. Carol

Carol, I think you must have done it correctly. I cannot see the reason behind this duplicate content. I was sure I had made an error until I looked at Jay's privacy policy. Time will tell, I hope!
Thanks so much for your comment. Valerie

Marion responded to your question below, Valerie. I'd better check mine to see if it's there and I I need to get rid of it.

Thanks for that, Carol. I'm so pleased that Marion has responded as now the problem can be fixed.

Yes, she is so awesome!

Marion is extremely awesome, Carol.

I've just fixed one of my sites and I'll do the other 3 now.

Good for you, Valerie. Way to go. My website is still an infant, and I didn't have anything that needed to be done except add the plug in and change to the new privacy policy that Kyle sent around.

Thanks for sharing, Valerie.

You're welcome, Roger :)
