Do You Allow Trackbacks and Pingbacks in WordPress Posts
Hi Folks,
Every post in my website provides the option to allow Trackbacks and Pingbacks. The option to ‘Allow’ appears to be checked automatically on every new post I produce.
I’ve taken little notice of this until now, when I’m wondering is there really a benefit of allowing these on my site.
I haven’t delved deeply into the purpose of the Trackbacks and Pingbacks, but my feeling is that maybe I should not allow them.
From what I’ve observed they are for the benefit of sharing comments between one website and another site.
It seems that they probably have a value for Blog sites where there is a lot of daily activity, including input from social media.
However, for a website in the affiliate marketing niche I feel there may be more value in disallowing Trackbacks and Pingbacks. They remind me of RSS Feeds which I never had success with.
I am interested to learn your thoughts on Trackbacks and Pingbacks, and whether or not you allow them on your website.
Thank you.
Valerie

I've never heard of either. Is this something that's specific to your theme maybe? If not, I guess I should be looking into this further

Shelley, I believe trackbacks and pingbacks come with all themes. They are part of WordPress.
If you look at your posts in Edit mode, below the content you have written you will see two checkboxes. One says 'Allow Comments', the other says 'Allow Trackbacks and Pingbacks'. That's where you can disable them.
Thanks for comment :)
Thanks for the post, Valerie, as I had never heard of trackbacks or pingbacks. I have disabled them for now.
Well I think you'd want pingback. It will notify when someone else links to your site. Trackback sends an excerpt of a post that someone wrote with a link to a post of your's as a comment. Here's an article on trackbacks/pingbacks and how to disable them. http://www.wpbeginner.com/beginners-guide/what-why-and-how-tos-of-trackbacks-and-pingbacks-in-wordpress/
Thanks very much Hope for your comment including the link to the information about trackbacks and pingbacks. From the information I read, it appears that mostly spam occurs through those links. So, I am disabling them on my site.
All the best :)
Valerie
Yeah a lot of spam does come through there. Thankfully you have the ability to moderate it.
Thanks Valerie
Not there yet! I was tempted to say only Saturdays and Sundays!
There you go, that’s the extent of my knowledge on this at the moment.
I trust you are well, have a great day ahead!

Now I know you get up to mischief on Saturdays and Sundays, Wayne.
Oh well, all that's left to say is:-
Thanks so much for your comment. It's good to hear from you.
You have a great day too :)

How could I not believe you. Lol ! -:)
You're welcome, Wayne.

Never allow Trackback or Pingback, its may harmful to your site in future.
Just disable the allow button for Trackback and Pingback at WP backoffice. Go to Setting =>Discussion=>uncheck the box for allow Trackback and Pingback
Thank you, ShuiHyen.
I thought they maybe harmful, but wondered why WordPress would provide the feature.
Anyway, I will disable them on all my post.
Thanks again :)

I too always wonder the importance of pingBack and track back in our websites. But pardon me it has never occurred to me to ask. Have you asked the support team if it should be uncecked since it automatically checks itself and that is why I always think it is important. It is very good if we know the importance of it.
Thanks for this important question.
Thanks for your comment, Bibian.
No, I haven't asked Site Support because trackback and pingback are optional. From comments I received, it appears that these can be spam hazard.
