Daylight Saving Time - What Benefit Does This Provide?

Today, 24th September in New Zealand, is the first day of Daylight Saving Time for 2017.

When daylight saving commenced way back in the 1970s I enjoyed the benefit of the longer evenings. Some people did not find enjoyment as I did; my late husband was one of those people. The change of time seemed to upset his equilibrium, as it did with what appeared to be a significant number of people.

Never did I give other thought to the reason for Day Light Saving.

I well remember the Dairy Farming community were not in favor of the change of time due to milking cows. Farmers were not happy about the return to dark mornings for the early and later part of Day Light Saving.

Now, I don’t why I’m questioning this season’s DLS. Maybe it is the result of watching the Parliamentary election discussions on Television last night. Or perhaps it is the influence of Quora which I am trying to come to terms with. Anyway, I decided to do some research about Day Light Saving.

I didn’t need to look very far to find the rationale behind DLS is the saving of power.

Apparently, moving the clock forward one hour provides a significant and worth while saving of domestic power.

Of course research goes into much more depth about power savings than I am going to write about here.

What I did find interesting is that Benjamin Franklin conceived the idea of Day Light Saving way back in 1794 and wrote an essay titled ‘An Economical Project’.

With our busy lives it is easy to accept things as we see them on the surface. In other words we can take things for granted, or just go with the flow. But, sometimes that doesn’t lead to the results we need, long term.

I can relate this to many occurrences in my life. Sometimes I have felt I’ve ‘skimmed the surface’ to get gain knowledge on different subjects. These days, I try not to take things for granted but to learn the reason why I should do certain things in a particular way.

And this for me relates to affiliate marketing and one of the reasons why I am so passionate about Wealthy Affiliate.

Not only do we have extensive training from Kyle and Carson, we have Jay’s weekly video training which is always followed by a Q & A session. Plus a knowledgeable community where we can ask all our questions and receive quality answers.

Good Morning Valerie,

In summer time it is very light outside at 07.00 when I get up.
The evenings are still light with perhaps a gorgeous sundown at 21.00. Lately, it is dark in the mornings and I find it difficult not to turn over and snore a bit more when the alarm clock rings. I think it is the coming weekend that we change time, we will sleep an hour longer and it will be a bit lighter outside when waking up, I do know some who have a bit of a problem adjusting to the new timetable. The cats sitting in front of the kitchen door waiting for breakfast. Cindy always waits in the garage for her breakfast. The chickens and ducks also complain when they are being fed later than usual.

Greetings from the south of Spain, Taetske

Good Morning Taetske

I like what you said about your cats waiting for breakfast. I can imagine the chickens and ducks getting quite vocal about wanting their meal! I don't have feathered family members to keep me in order these days, but Mandy meows at me very strongly if she is kept waiting! So no doubt, Spain is now in Autumn. At the end of this week will be in the second month of Spring. Time moves very quickly, particularly in good weather.
We have stormy weather right now. Last night it was hard to sleep with a powerful wind raging outside. Thunder is predicted for today. So that's true Spring weather in this part of the world.

Greetings from New Zealand, Valerie

Here is a serious lack of rain, nearly the whole of Spain is having a shortage. Our pantanos=water reservoirs are between 30 to 50% of their capacity and a dry autumn is foreseen by the meteorological people, not good. I think I was mistaken, our time change comes a bit later, I always forget from one year to the other.

All the best, Taetske

Those low reservoirs are not good. I am sure there will be much concern. I do hope some unexpected rain eventuates soon.

Forgetting DST is fair enough Taetske. I don't always remember it, either.

Have a nice day, Valerie

Back to standard time November 5 in the US!

That's a big difference in time Michael. It seems you have a much shorter DST than NZ.

We go on DST at the end of March and back to EST in November.

So you have 5 months DST. There seems to be quite a difference in the length of DST between countries. Very interesting.
Thank you, Davida.

March to November

Next Sunday in lower half of eastern Australian.

Just one week after NZ. Thank you Tom :)

good to see another kiwi in WA enjoying daylight savings
awesome work Valerie

Now that's really good Arpo, to know you are a Kiwi. Wonderful!

Thanks so much for your kind message :)

So far in Qld, we have escaped daylight saving even so I don't think it would bother me much now :)

That's a surprise Carol. I thought it was world wide. Very interesting indeed. So you are in Queensland, Australia?
No doubt with a country as vast as Australia , each state can have their own laws!

Qld has been out of step for a very long time :)

Has it really? That is interesting Carol. Could it be that the climate is hotter, or greater than other states.

Queenslanders voted against it. There is talk of perhaps introducing it in the south-east but not the north.

Well, it's good the government responded to the people.
I don't remember a ballot on it in NZ. But, it is such a long time ago, more than 40 years.

Look deeply and in all of the corners and crevices right. I am not a fan of DST.... it wacks out my internal clock. Thanks, Jay

Thanks for your comment Jay.
I believe you would be one of many who doesn't like DLS for the same reason.
What suits one person might not suit another. In many things we have choices, but unfortunately not so with DLS.
