Best Way to Compress Images Without Using a Plug-in

As WA members we are extremely conscious of Site Speed and the effect some plug-ins could have on our sites.

My post yesterday ‘EWWW Image Optimizer Effect on Site Speed’ revealed that EWWW plug-in is not for everyone.

The reason for writing that post was to show the effect EWWW plug-in has on our websites.

However, I do not use EWWW plug-in as I have a better solution to compress, or optimize, images.

Tinypng.com is my favorite for compressing all PNG and JPEG images. This is a Free tool that will compress up to 20 images in one session.

Using Tinypng.com is simple:
  • Upload an image, or images, by using the Arrow, identified. Images are quickly compressed and easily downloaded.

I save my images to a file on my computer identified especially for compressed images. Then upload images to my website in the usual way.

It is a simple as that and without concern of using a plug-in.

Are my images correctly compressed?

I am satisfied my images are adequately compressed, or optimized, as I did a test by trying to get EWWW plug-in to optimize images further still.

  • I received a message ‘Images already optimized’.

The EWWW plug-in has a purpose, but it is not needed for compression, or optimization, of PNG or JPEG files.

Enjoy your wonderful life. It is precious!

This is very good information. As a newbie I wouldn't have questioned the use of EWWW plug-in. Being that is comes with the websites that are created here.

Now we all know that there is another option that may work better for images.

Thanks for your comment Frank.
Tinypng.com is an option. If you are satisfied with the performance of your website as it is, then don't make a change.

I suggest you look further down through these comments and read Patsy's comment, and my reply to her.

It's all valuable information, particularly for beginners.

I will be sure to evaluate both options before making any decisions. Thanks again.

A very wise move Frank. Thank you :)

I appreciate the information Valerie. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks very much Randy.
Good to hear from you again :)

Thank you Valerie.

I wonder then if I can just get rid of that plugin I agree, the less the better since its not needed for compression or optimization. That is why I added it, I thought that was it's purpose.

Now I wonder, that there is nothing compressing or optimizing my images. My speed results are excellent at 100/99/99 so something must be compressing/optimizing them. The 'loading' speed for my mobile devices is 3 seconds.

Hi Patsy

Obviously EWWW is working well for you. With your excellent speed results I recommend you leave well alone. As they saying goes, 'don't fix what's not broken'. In your case, nothing is broken!

The thing is that EWWW does optimize images as we know them. It also optimizes images through links. Please don't ask me what I mean, but that's what Site Support did on my website. What they optimized on my site was something showing up in the reports we get when testing site speed, as in those reports I don't understand!

There are so many influences when it comes to the running of a website. My site speed is not good, even though I went with the Beta WA site speed. But I think some of my problem is the Service Provider here in NZ, and I should change it! But that's another process for me to deal with.

Congratulations on you magnificent site speed!

And, thanks Patsy, for your comment. I appreciate it :)

Hi Valerie,

I see, I may have misunderstood thinking it wasn't doing it's job.
I'm happy you have a solution that works and it isn't a plugin.

Thank you for your thorough reply it was interesting. Site Support sees what we don't on their end.

Thank you my speed is awesome it doesn't change but remains the same result :)

You are welcome about my comment sometimes we can't answer all messages it's too much :)

Thanks Patsy.
Keep that fantastic site speed going exactly as it is!!

Kraken.io is another great tool! It's Web interface is free to use.
