Adsense Optimization - Have You Turned On Auto Ads

Hi Folks,

Just catching up with those who display Adsense ads on your website.

I have had Adsense on one website for several years and over the past year commissions have been very low.

On searching Adsense Optimization I discovered the option of using Auto Ads, so I turned them on a just a few days ago.

Immediately there was an increase in commissions, quite significant in respect to percentage. But, not to get excited about because the percentage earnings had been so low!

Unfortunately, I have given almost no attention to the website since early January this year, other than checking Google Analytics, Adsense and Amazon results.

Today I decided to take a look to see what the Auto Ads look like on this niche site. I was horrified to see great blocks of ads, some appearing 2 to 3 times within a post.

This reminded me of years ago when it was okay to insert call to action banners above the fold and at least twice more throughout the content.

Obviously, the ads vary throughout a day. I took a second look a few hours later and some posts had less or no ads. But the Home page still had 3 large ads within the content. Not a good look, and no way of excluding them from any particular page or post.

Are you using Adsense Auto Ads. If so, I would be interested to learn what you think about the benefit or otherwise of these ads.

Thank you.

Yes, I have activated the auto adds, and I don't like those horrifying 3 times big block either, but I can't figure out where to put it off again, can you please lead me through this process?

It's in your Adsense account Loes, under your 'My Ads' either Auto Ads, Ad Units.
But there's no way of turning it off, you have to erase it from your Theme Editor. So you have to see the code from the 'Set Auto Ads' where you copied it and then find it the exact code on the Theme Editor.

Thanks, I have some homework to do:(

I found in the settings I could disable inarticle advertisements, I will see if that's the solution, it does display for now, but it need perhaps some time

OK, which is easier to do is what we want to discover. If it can be disabled and whenever we want it next time we will enable it.

I hope you manage to disable these ads Loes. I'm going to investigate code I inserted either in the footer or header, I can't remember which one. However, I need to leave that for another day.

I will see tomorrow

I've not tried them but will let you know whether I like them if I do.

That's good to know Yvonne, thank you.
I hope Adsense works well for you :)

You are making me think twice about activating these Auto Ads, Valerie. I don't want the ads to be too obtrusive.

I will likely follow Sukumar's advice and only activate these ads on select pages of my site, and inside a widget.

It's like you can DEACTIVATE Auto ads on a few select pages. You cannot as such activate Auto ads only on a few pages. The Global setting is for the entire site and across all your pages. The Advanced URL setting allows you to de-select a few pages from showing the ads or showing specific ad types on these pages. If you want Auto ads only on a few pages, you will be required to submit the URLs of all other remaining pages where you don't want these ads one-by-one. This, I think, would be a hassle. What say?

It's good advice Sukumar has given us and I will try excluding some pages. I don't know yet whether I'll continue with Auto ads but I'll see how they go over the next few weeks.

Thanks so much for leaving your comment, Kaju :)

Yeah, this sounds like a hassle to me Sukumarth, thanks for the input!

I haven’t yet but am considering. Not sure how I would like the look but if it brings in sales that’s ok. :)

I hope Adsense works for you when you do start. It's not something that brings in a lot of income these days. It's something that I referred to in the past as 'easy money' because there was little need to do anything with it. But that hasn't been the case in last 12 to 24 months. Google has changed Adsense. If I was starting again, and knew what I know now, I wouldn't go with Adsense. But, as they say - hindsight is a great thing.

Thanks so much Kristy for your comment :)

Thanks for the comment. I think I will wait a bit. I’m not feeling Adsense these days. :)

That sounds like a wise decision, Kristy :)

I do have adsense inserted. I do not have lots of traffic yet to make it worth while however. I am also testing the auto adsense and I am not sure if it really makes a difference for me.

Thank you for bringing up this topic. It is interesting to see what everyone has done.

Thanks Ha for your comment. I'm pleased you found it interesting and I hope Adsense eventually works well for you. It does take traffic to be successful, but that happens over time.

All the best :)

Hi Valerie,
I also did a little test, but removed them in no time. I guess they are good when you are getting lots of traffic.

Hi Carol,
It's true that traffic counts towards success with Adsense. Like all things with Google, Adsense has changed over the years. I used to have success with it but, it's dwindled. Hence the reason for trying Auto ads.
Thanks so much for leaving your comment :)

Hi Valerie,

I recently tested Adsense auto ads on my site and pretty quickly removed them all.

All, that is, except for the mobile phone ones which are not so intrusive.

I removed all ads from my widgets and all ads from my blog posts.

Hi David, thanks very much for your comment. I certainly understand why you removed those ads. I might be doing that too. However, I will take notice of what Sukumar has said in his comment below, and take it from there.

Yes, It's good advice - you can control which pages and posts the ads appear on.

I've flip-flopped a couple of times with Adsense ads. I removed my ads a while back, following Jay's advice in one of his Live VIdeo Classes.

I had Adsense on more than one site, and at the peak, I was earning around $200-$400 a year (once every few months I'd suddenly get a few thousand yen paid into my bank account here in Japan courtesy of Google)!

It's nice to get the cash, but... I kind of agree with Jay that if the purpose of your blog is to convert visitors into customers/affiliates then focus on that.

And if you want Adsense earnings, create a blog specifically for that purpose...

The only problem is that I don't have time or incentive to create an Adsense blog.

Likewise, David. There's no time for working on another blog. I have more than I can cope with now. I have four sites but two receive no care at all!

Thanks for your insights. Much appreciated :)

Thanks a lot for bring to our attention this crucial issue which might be an oversight for many here. By the way I don't like AdSense ads so much. Well, am a semi-newbie and my website is just starting to pick with about 10 clicks on content per day. Yesterday I earned $0.03 on AdSense. Does this mean 3 people clicked on the ads? And if so, it means these people are payingpaying just cents. Haha. It also means that I will need about 1000 clicks per day if am to get any meaningful revenue from AdSense. Are there any other type of ads that I can display on my website which generate more than 0.01 per click. I will be very glad to know if there is. Cheers!! Good day/ goodnight.

Hi Ssemanda, as traffic to your website grows so will the number of clicks from Adsense increase. In saying that, some of the cents you earn are not from clicks, they are from impressions. Impressions being another subject, too hard to explain here and I'm not expert on it!
There are varying factors with earning commissions from Adsense, but traffic is the main one. So, I recommend concentrating on increasing your traffic for now.

Thanks so much dear Vallerie

My pleasure Ssemanda :)

Valerie, you can exclude particular pages from showing these ads. For instance, the Home page, the About page, Disclosure page, etc. Just go to the Advanced URL settings and customise the ads you want to show on these URLs. You can even have these pages with no ads at all. And the best thing is, the Advanced URL setting overrides your previous Global settings and there's no need to insert the code again as other pages are not affected. As for whether Auto ads are good or bad, well, that's a personal thing. The overall response is pretty mixed: while some say Auto ads are great, there are people who absolutely hate them. Since these ads came out in February this year, I feel it's still early days to say anything in finality. I feel there'll be improvements there later.

Regards,
Sukumar Thingom

Thank you so much for your help Sukumar. I had no idea the ads could be customized. I will certainly take action on that.

I greatly appreciate your comment.

Valerie

Thank you for this post. I have just discovered last week about this auto ads but I haven't noticed yet the effect. But AdSense, however, suggested it.

Thanks for your message, Jimmy. I hope Adsense Auto Ads work for you. You might like to read Sukumar's comment above as he has provided some information which I didn't know about. You could find it helpful.
