About the Rules of Give and Take Comments

Hi Folks,

This message is a follow up to the recent post from Loes about the rules of Give and Take Comments.

I am aware that not all posts are seen by all members. However, I feel it necessary to bring Loes' post again to the attention of members who participate in Give and Take Comments.

Yesterday, while in that forum I read messages inviting other members to send links by Private Message for return comments.

Later in the day I received a PM advising that a comment had been left on my site, and requesting a comment in return.

All of this goes against the WA Rules set by our leaders.

Please read all the information that Loes states clearly in her post and keep the WA community functioning in the manner intended by Kyle and Carson.

Many hugs to you today.
Trevor

Thank you, Trevor.
Much appreciated :)

Good reminder! Thank you.
Sheila

You're welcome, Sheila.
Thanks very much :)

Thank you for the reminder! I'm clear that we shouldn't send our site links through PM. I was always confused why members did this

Thanks Gabriella. I agree that the PM method is confusing.

Glad you brought this to light again Valerie. Even on the 'Give and Take Comment Thread' here within WA, there are people asking for us to send our link to them by PM, and I've never understood why ~Shell

True, Shell. I've never understood why members do that. It seems that they don't understand the meaning of the word 'rules', which is rather a concern

Thanks for the wonderful reminder Valerie.

You're welcome, Lanu.
Thanks very much for leaving your comment :)

I have to say, I wondered when someone said they wanted a PM to let them know if we left a comment. I was confused.

Later I realized that it is easier to get a PM from someone rather than go back and try to find our post on the thread a day or two later. There can be many posts and it is easier to keep track with a PM. This is more of an issue if you are getting many comments. You can't just look at the comments on your website and know which ones came from the Give and Take thread. There is no way to know where a comment came from unless you happen to recognize the name, website or avatar of another member here.

Also, what we see on our website is just the person's website link. Often people request comments on a particular post in the Thread. So, you need to find your request on the Thread (scrolling down and down and down) to see which particular post the other person wants the comment on. That is why a PM is easier.

I think if someone REQUESTS a PM then it is fine to send them one. That is not spam since you asked them to.

However, no one should ever PM someone asking for a comment out of the blue. No one should send a PM request uninvited.

Jessica

The rules clearly state that after giving 3 comments we can ask for a comment. I have found that to work well. But asking for comments via PM is not permitted.

My post was not intended to upset members. The intent was to draw attention to the rules. And the post Loes published about a week ago clearly highlights the rules. Of course, with so much content constantly flowing through the community, not all posts are seen, including Top 10.

Thank you Jessica for your insights.

Hello Valerie,

I saw Loes's post. I don't ask for comments via PM. I was not saying anyone should. I was explaining the reason I think people are doing this and that they ask others to contact them via PM after they comment. I am not saying people should not leave 3 comments first either.

I totally agree that no one should send a PM with a request at random. If I ask someone to send me a PM then it is perfectly fine. Similarly, we should never send a PM to someone asking them to go to our website or post our website link in a post here. If someone specifically says "Please give me your website link" then it is ok. There has to be some logic and common sense here and I am pretty sure Kyle and Carson would agree that if someone asks you for something it is fine to give it and it is not spam. I have had many members ask for my link since they want to see how something is set up.

With the comment thread It can be a problem though since people end up using the PMs for other purposes such as randomly requesting comments. That is spam. So, I guess it is a slippery slope!

I think if someone specifically asks to be notified by PM it is fine Valerie.

Maybe one of the reasons why they do is to get free from giving comments on other's post.

I'm not sure Jimmy why they do it. If they just followed the rules it would be great.

Thank you for your comment :)

Sorry, grammatically wrong. They wanted free comments from others.

The idea of Give and Take is to give comments, but not to ask for comments. So when a member sends a PM asking for comments, then they are clearly breaking the rules.

That's what you want to drive in.

But I would like to raise the point Valerie. If two or three agreed to share their URL so they can support each other it's not bad.

It's different when you generally campaign in the community.

I agree with your Jimmy. There is no harm in a few people having their circle of contacts and keeping the communication between themselves, and no-one else!

Thank you, Valerie, I too have seen and experienced that a lot of people make their own rules in the comment thread

Well, it just go too much yesterday when I read so many comments about using PM, and then it happened to me. I sent a link to your post to that member.

The whole thing is that the rules are so simple, and yet are overlooked by so many.

Thank you so my for your response to my post, Loes. Much appreciated.

It is good to share this with your own circle of friends because, as you said, not everyone sees every post. I did see Loes' post and I have happened this to me many times in the past. Sometimes it is a newbie who doesn't yet know the rules, but more often than not, it is someone trying to circumvent the system.

Thank for sharing!

Anita

True Anita. I don't why members do that. I can understand it happening with new members. Even then, the rules are clearly written. Why try to circumvent the system. It just doesn't work.

Thanks very much for your comment.

You are quite welcome, Valerie!

Newbies need to learn rules my dear.

Yes, they do.

Thanks for sharing, Valerie.

You're welcome, Roger.
Thank you :)

No problem, Valerie.
