Stuck are we?

Welcome to the club!

Sorry about the Yodaism in the title.

Sometimes the wealth of information on the internet is overwhelming and can leave your brain spinning! So I have decided to write this blog to maybe help you and me be on track to create a successful website. We often say to ourselves 'give me a break'...I am here to tell you that you have to 'make a break'.

Start here will we?

The hardest part is working out how you are going to make money at this and you don't feel you're equipped with the knowledge. First off you have all the knowledge you need. Just look at all the websites you enjoy (you wouldn't be here if it wasn't for the internet) which can include: social media, travel, DIY, research, holidays, beaches, scenery, people, animals, and so on. Now take one of your interests and do your research, check out which websites give you the most joy and take screen shots, if possible, print them off.

Next:

Lay out all the web pages and go through them and see which layout appeals to you most. Then take a pad and pen and sketch some layouts that you could use for your website using other people's ideas (we are not plagiarising, just getting ideas...you won't be making replicas). Do not start using Wordpress just yet (if you've never created a website this can be daunting) just get clarity on what makes you tick.

Happy are we?

Once you are happy with your design now is the time for content. Start reading blogs/articles that appeal to you and use them as a basis for your own. It doesn't matter if you can't write like the professionals...there are ways to tackle this. (Yoda) Into a word document you must start writing your blog. Short succinct paragraphs are best and try to make sure the first paragraph summarises what people can expect by reading your website/blog.

How do you write professionally?

If you have found blogs that have interested you and you have followed their style you are pretty much on your way to writing professionally. Most word documents have a spell checker and will also check your grammar. I am no professional and have just found a program called ProWritingAid which does all that for you...it costs, but I am sure there are free ones as well. Read, re-read, re-read what you have written...keep checking it and be honest with yourself, would you read your own blog. One big reason to re-read what you have written is you will get other ideas you can incorporate which you didn't think of the first few times you read your blog. Don't get disheartened it doesn't have to be perfect.

Pictures:

Put pictures relevant to your blog into your website. It is always good to include people in your shots (with their permission) to make your site more personal and has the ability to give people, at a glance, what your site is all about.

Website Construction:

Now you need to put this into a web package, which on here is WordPress. Use WA and the internet. Type questions in like 'how to use WordPress' in the search bar at the top of you WA page....every time you get stuck, type your questions into search on google or WA, there are plenty of solutions out there, but always look at a few, one answer will suit you and the way that you think.

Affiliate Marketing:

Now here you have me. Until I came here I didn't know what it was or how you use it. Luckily this is covered on this site. Make sure you follow the training here to a 'T'. As with all the information I have supplied...I have just tried to condense it a bit.

One Final Word of Advice:

Sit on it for a while, then read it again...let it percolate in your head, do some last minute tweaks. Now get it out there, it doesn't mater if it's not the best, it's a start and from here on out it gets easier. Do not try to do too many things at once. Just one step at a time. You will find that real success comes from plodding not running, I know, I ran a successful printing business for 16 years until I was getting too old for it. Everyone wants to be successful and the only way to be successful is to do the hard stuff...once you do that it gets easier. Also do not get worried about ratings on google...I created a steampunk blog which has been on page one of google for years now just by writing about what I like and in my case, make, without knowing any of this stuff. This is my site: steampunkwayoflife.blogspot.com.au it doesn't have any ads yet and it's what I love to do, make things! If you read it, I would be delighted and if you comment, ecstatic!

I wrote this article to get my thoughts in order and hopefully one person here will be inspired by this. If you have any questions post them here and I will be more than happy to answer them.

Fantastic post, Michael. Thank you.

A pleasure and I am following you..thanks!

Thank you very much, Michael. :)

Great post Michael. A doable process provided, as I am understanding this, takes the time to read, evaluate and sit back and reflect, change and add as needed. Thanks Michael.

Hi Chris, I think that people tend to rush to get their website up and running and don't take the time to craft it. Refining your site is the key to making it more readable and enjoyable. My partner is a successful writer/producer and she never puts any thing out until she has fine tuned it over a few months and she gets paid accordingly. I am not at her level but I take it all on board. Cheers, Michael.

Great info Michael. I tend to rush a bit, so will heed your advice and slow down! Regards, Jan
