Super Moon Day

I couldn't help but have a play with this. Today is 'Super Moon day'. It was a weird thought process that led me here.

While I was walking the dogs this morning, I noticed that the moon was out and it looked to be a 'full' one. I thought I would check to see if it officially was when I returned home. Then, they were talking about the moon on the radio. I had had confirmation and I moved on.

After I had done all of my catching up, I set about writing a post. As I was thinking about a title, which normally causes me grief, it occurred to me to have one that promoted the start of the week. 'Mad Monday Meanderings' or something that was akin to a bugle cry. It is Monday after all.

My thoughts turned to the word 'Monday' itself. Where did it originate ? I knew that most of the

days relate to the gods in Norse mythology, Wotan, Thor and Freya are all fairly easy to remember. I could think of any for Monday. So I looked it up. This is where it all fell into place.

According to one site Monday in French is 'Lundi' and 'Lun' translates to 'Moon' so Monday comes from 'Moon day'.

It was a bit uncanny, with today being the day of the 'Super Moon' The biggest lunar event of the year, thus far...and it's on a Monday.

If I was looking for that 'wow' factor to get everyone going on an otherwise bleak Monday morning, I need to look no further. Not just 'Super Monday' it's 'Super Moon day'. I love it when things like that happen.

You're probably wondering why the moon appears to be bigger than normal, I know I was. Well, uninterestingly, it's because the moon is at its closest point to the earth on its orbit. Bit of a let down then.

However, it is also known as the 'Worm Moon' and Lenten Moon, Crow Moon, Crust Moon, Chaste Moon, Sugar Moon, and Sap Moon. It official technical name is 'Perigee-syzygy' and it's meant to be the last full moon of winter. This, in turn makes the name 'worm' more sensical. It is believed to be after earthworms rising from the thawing ground after winter. Now you know.

There's a whole litany of other facts, figures and tales about the moon but I will resist the temptation to litter the page with them.

It will be interesting to see if the temperament for the dogs will change as the day goes on. Normally they go a bit weird, though they're both daft as brushes anyway, so it might be difficult to tell.

As for us, or me, there's usually a noticeable difference, when the moon is full, a slightly more oppressive feeling. Not sure why, the scientist could probably explain it without raising an eyebrow, quizzically.

Right then, I'm off to do a bit of howling.

Have a Super Moon day.

Twack Romero.

Hi, Twack, that is so interesting, I had to go and have a search, Monday gets its name from the Anglo-Saxon word "mondandaeg" which translates to "the moon's day."

Which is so interesting in that there are many different versions of Monday's lineage.

The Monday stunner for me was searching through the first 10 pages of results; it appeared that some posts were coming up on different pages.

One post several listings.

That was interesting and one of those things that could just about get you howling at the moon.

I enjoyed your post very much.

Alex

Thank you Alex. It was fascinating and I found out plenty of new info, which is nice.
You are right in regard to the lineage, it defintitely varied depeding on which post you read.
I knew some of the history behind week day names but not all. According to one source, Saturday was named after the ancient Roman god, Saturn, who represented 'fun and feasting'. Now I see why Saturday is the kind of day it is.
Appreciated you taking the time, thank you.

Yes full moon there is always something unique on it and unexplainable. It always sends a good message to everyone. It is so nice to walk with someone because who knows it could really come up to something that is unexpected

It is just like a magic. That is a very nice view you do have in there with the howling of the dog.

Lydia.

Thank you for this Lydia. It seems that we've been fascinated by the moon for centuries. Certainly it has been used as the reason for some strange behaviour.

Yes, the moon is very important in our lives for centuries. Without them, I don`t know what would be the universe.

Hi Twack, had a full moon last night. Looking forward to the super moon, as I haven't had a good reason, or excuse to howl for a while.

I have a friend, yes just one, who is really into these things as she is totally into astrology, the alignment of planets and so on.

Great post, thanks for the share.
The comma king,,,,,
Michael

Thank you Michael you're very welcome. I'm sure there are those that would say howl anyway.
I like the 'comma', for me, it allows that pause, no matter how small, that can make all the difference in how a sentence reads.
I also wouldn't mind being in the 'Two Comma Club'. 1,000,000.

Twack,

The Super Worm Moon was AWESOME!
I spent a couple of hours taking it in last evening and it was glorious!

A very interesting post.
Maybe because of my name, I have a deep interest in Greek mythology and the sky and sea - that's where most of the Gods live. 😉

Thank you for sharing.
Have a great day!

Cassi

Thank you in return Cassi. Greek mythology is a fascinating subject. Every now and then I will venture down one of its many rabbit holes.

Yes, it is, isn't it?
That's why I love my name. 😊

Cassi

It's been a long time since I read Homer's 'Iliad'. 'Troy' was part of that story.
