Site Comments Are They Worth It ?

Site comments are they worth it ? Me being me, which is fun by the way, has meant that I changed the title about three times thus far. Maybe more. Originally this was going to be part of an SAC post and there was something else but I've forgotten what it was, probably will be in the 'pile'.

Since I've been here I have seen numerous posts and debates about 'Site Comments' It has seemed to be a divisive subject. Some alterations have been put in place and maybe they have helped to ease the situation somewhat.

This post is not about 'slating' the system or 'bigging it up' just my own take on it based on the recent events. It is what it is and no matter what anyone says, everyone will have their own opinion, probably based on their own experience and that's just fine and dandy. In some respects, it's a bit like when we talk about rankings, good, bad, worth it, not worth it. Whichever 'hat' you wear, it's all good, I'm not going to ask you to wear a different one.

So, as part of the SAC (I won't mention it again) we have to ask for comments, each and every time we publish a post, minimum of two. This was putting me well outside my comfort zone. That meant I was either going to have to buy some credits or earn them by leaving some comments. Mm, leave comments, um. Not my strong suit.

I had, had a few forays into leaving comments during my first month, also as part of the OEC training. It didn't go well. First, like a few of us I'm sure, I took it to mean 'feedback', which it is not. After a few comments were disapproved I kind of backed off, licked my wounds and left it alone. Sound familiar ?

I tried again at some point but really struggled to leave the 'correct' type of comment, more disapproval followed. I just didn't get it. I read some of the training again and also a few of the blogs that other members had posted. Here are a couple of really excellent posts and did plant a seed or two, that at least steered me in the right direction.

Yep, still didn't click fully. This brings me to present times. I now have to make this work, otherwise I am not fulfilling my obligation. Ask for comments and leave them, at least two.

Then, I had multiple 'Penny drops'. 'Site Comments' is a tool and should be used as such. The platform is designed to help us all build our websites into the best they can be. Every feature here is designed with that in mind. It all helps with getting our content noticed and ranked better. You probably know the 'how's' far better than me and feel free to expand, if you wish.

So, that penny is in my pocket, tool, got it. Now I have to actually leave a comment that will be

approved. Here's how it all clicked into place and worked for me. I pull up the website page that requires a comment. The title is (I have just made this up by the way)

WWW dot faddietswork dot com
"How to lose weight quickly and still eat your favourite foods"

Then I ask myself a question based on the title of the post.

"Why am I here, reading this post ?"

Here's the thing, now I have to turn into 'Commentator Man'. I am here specifically to leave a quality comment for this post. That means I have to be genuine in my response, (whether you are conversant with the subject matter, or not) Here's my answer to the first question.

" After spending the last few days searching for a realistic way of losing weight quickly I have finally found one that makes sense. I need to lose half a stone before my daughters wedding in two months"

So , we're up to over thirty words and I've explained exactly why I am searching and why this post is relevant. Now I would pick out one point that I can work with.

" I didn't realise that drinking two litres of water a day could make such a difference during dieting and that keeping properly hydrated was so important. I travel a lot, so find it hard to eat proper food at regular times. At least, now I know I will be doing something else that will help."

There it is. It's a puzzle or challenge, whatever you want to call it. My comment might not be the best ever one but there is a good chance that it is acceptable and gives the opportunity for the writer to respond in a positive manner and maybe impart some valuable tips on how to manage eating and travelling, better. Who knows. You may read it and decide you would have a different perspective based on you own experience, sweet.

As an added bonus, you get to see other websites. I know you can go on the web now and see some but these are your peers. It's brilliant because they are just like you. Every website you visit belongs to a member here. So you are having a unique opportunity to see what others are doing. It's brilliant. It's a chance to see firsthand things you may have only read about, being implemented. You'll recognise parts of the training in the layout or wording of articles. How they are using widgets or buttons, 'call to action', links, pop-ups and so on. Sure, some of the sites are the result of years of fine-tuning but others are much newer. They are all the result of someone else's hard work.

My children, for many years, have enjoyed making fun of me for saying "You wouldn't believe how good it is for you" normally while I'm trying to get them to eat something new. So my new phrase is "You wouldn't believe what I learnt today". Every post you read is an opportunity to learn something you didn't know. On face value, that could be the topic, on another level it could be about the writing style and how the subject is expressed.

Whichever way you want to spin it, in my honest opinion, 'Site Comments' are worth it, you may disagree and that's fine, this isn't training, a guide or a tip, just how I went about it.

Enjoy the rest of your day.

Great post Twack, I have found myself in the same boat, this post is helpful.
Thank you
Daisy

You are very welcome Daisy and thank you for saying so.

Welcome. Thanks for following me 😄

Always amazes me when the site owner asks for comments, gets them, but doesn't respond. Firstly, to anyone genuinely finding your site organically, ie not a WA member, you look kinda ignorant or rude. Secondly comments add to your overall word count so Google sees the post as longer than it is and Google, we are taught likes longer articles. Reply thoughtfully to every comment and you could double the size of the original post. Winner winner chicken dinner (or tofu if you prefer).

Only had Tofu as an ingredient for 'pretend' scrambled eggs, it was yummy.
Spot on about the comments. It is another 'aid' for us to use in the furtherance of our sites. Does betterment work ? Is it a word ? Furtherment isn't.

Crispy tofu in a stir fry or on it's own with a chilli dipping sauce - food heaven 😊

Everyone likes stir fry and I have to lather it in soy sauce. Tofu might work. Nice one.

Yes, they are good, if you can use them properly. I had a "learning curve" too, as I didn't get it at first. Now seems better. Still, not my favorite thing to do, but will do it because I have to.

Yes indeed and I'd rather be enjoying it. I tried to keep in mind "How can I make this better ?" which is something I picked up form Mr.Robbins.
What am I going to learn from this post/article. Yesterday I learnt about 'Mana' and today about graphics tutorials.
I am well learnt.

lol...yes, you are well learnt. I made a comment this morning, I think it was (it's been a long day) and you had left a comment on the same site. I read it, and thought it sounded 'way fine. So, you are doing good, ole buddy.

I still won't do site comments at the moment. It would appear if you don't write exactly what the recipient wants then they refuse your comment.

If something is not good then it doesn't deserve a good write up, but some people just can't see that.

Derek

I could be wrong (it happens more than I like to mention) but that would be more in tune with 'Feedback'.

I have trouble with SiteComments. I wont be using it for a while. I need to build my site first. Then I will figure it out later.

Sounds like a plan Brenda, always a pleasure having you drop by.

I believe comments are very important. But leaving them has always been a struggle for me. I think your comment is perfect.

Laura

Thank you Laura. I think was I had seen 'the bigger picture' and started using the comments section as a resource, everything seemed to work better.

Very helpful.
Every time I start leaving a comment on a website at site comments, my heart skips a beat because I am very afraid, of not giving a good quality comment, I can spend a lot of time taking notes and writing the comment, editing, deleting starting over.

Its really time consuming but I guess we have to do it.

Hi Rose, I'm glad you found this helpful. I wasn't sure if I managed to get across the 'salient' bits. You're right though, I have found myself deleting and rewriting, more than once. At least that shows we care enough.

I still haven't decided how much I will do site comments going forward. I did a batch and then asked for comments on a post I had written that I knew was very good. I still have a few comments from others that I haven't decided whether to approve or not! (Hey, I'm a Libra!)

There must be traits that carry over into Virgo then, as I have had comments sat for a few weeks. Then I realised the issue was mine as I wasn't sure how to reply.

I would accept that comment :-)
I really like Site Comments. Yes, some days the comments aren't good, but we have to remember that there are new people here every day trying to learn, and we all went through the learning curve once, too.
I also use it as a means of seeing our training implemented. I've discovered many things that I have added to my own sites to improve them.
I've also used it as a means of helping others; if I find a link that isn't working or a typo that was missed or something, I will shoot the writer a PM if I'm able.

Thank you Cris, that's really stepping it up to another level. It really is using the whole section as a resource. I have seen plenty that has given me ideas for my own site. Just need to learn how to implement them.

As always a truly original and wonderful interpretation on the subject! Yes I go into ‘actor mode’ when I do site comments, I assume a character that would read that blog, and like you say I have a motive ‘why have I gone to this article, what is the search I would have typed. Then I’m there I’m in character, ready to wax lyrical about planets, cats, gaming, whatever.

Also as you say you see lots of designs, and lots of different styles. I learn from what keeps me engaged and borrow the great ideas.

When I get site comments on mine, it dies make me giggle getting a gamer to comment on baby bottles! 🤣

It shows how we truly are a pay it forward community!

Thank you Sara. It had been a real turnaround. I'm not sure which penny 'dropped' the most but I'm glad they did. Interestingly, I have found plenty of topics that I had some knowledge of, who knew ?
