No Where Else To Go (Sunday Morning Tidy Up)

I'm not sure what you would call it. 'No where else to go' could be the start of pretty much anything. It could refer to your move on a board game, coming to the end of a road, a 'cul-de-sac' no less. It could even be words from that weary, bedraggled form that is stood on your doorstep in the early hours of a winters morning.

Well, it's nothing like any of those examples, it's my latest folder that now resides in the middle of my desktop.

Before I get into that, I should warn you that this post is from the 'archives' as such, not that I have an archive, more this was in the 'blog templates'. I had obviously started it at some point and then never finished it.

That said, if any of it looks familiar then I apologise in advance, sometimes I stop one post mid way through and use some of the content in another post. I should read through the last ten or so of my posts to double-check but it's Sunday morning and I am tidying up so need to be efficient with my time. Thought I would let you know just in case you were having some 'deja vu'. Back to the main thread.

Don't sigh, I'm against the clock and just needed to get the ball rolling, so to speak, I wonder where that phrase comes from ? Were it that there was more time, I might be searching as we speak, so that I could enlighten you but that's not be. (It's either a term from the game of 'croquet' or William Harrison's Presidential campaign of the 1840's)

I spent a good portion of the morning sorting out my desktop, it would seem that I have a proclivity towards hoarding 'icons'. That in itself I do not believe to be problem, it does, however, become an issue when the only place I put them is on my desktop.

I have already had to minimise their size so that I didn't run out of room. Is it any wonder though ? There are so many things we have going on, so much we need to keep hold of and they all need to go somewhere. My desktop is the digital equivalent of an 'In Tray'.

So, after an hour or so of repositioning files and folders, my previous three-quarter full screen became rather less so.(The image only shows about two-thirds of the whole screen)

Like I said, this was after an hour or so of restructuring. I was left with a glut of links to various pages and whatnots and rather than going through each one individually, I decided to come back to them another day, for now they can all go in my newest, best, folder friend 'No Where Else To Go'.

Sorted. Here's something to ponder upon. You know when you have a realisation and wonder why it's never occurred to you before ? Well, for the last year and a half I have been trying to utilise the power of the 'free'.

Programs, software utilities and the like, all in the bargain-basement section. I have been reading recommendations to see which 'free' program or service is the 'best in class' and in so doing trying to get the best possible results for the least expenditure.

For the most part this is just fine, there are some jolly spiffing free programs out there if you look hard enough. (This last line has now reminded me of where some of this text might have gone, it was a post I wrote that mentioned Open Office as being an excellent alternative to the other 'paid' suites of software that offer spreadsheets, word processors and slides etc.)

Rather than rehashing something that you might already have read, I shall just say that for the most part there are some very capable 'free' versions out there and the 'Open Source' ones can give you much more functionality, which I had forgotten all about.

Right, well I'd better carry on with the 'tidying' and start the post I was originally intending to write. I also have to sift through the 38 tabs that are open, what's going on there ?

Hope you're having a sensational Sunday.

My desktop looks very similar. I try to clean it every now and then and end up having the same.
I've learned to live with that :-)
And you haven't seen my e-mail box. Even though I have created several folders, it's still too full.
Kudos to you, my friend, for the effort, seems you spent your Sunday wisely.
Lenka

Thank you and you're right, it was worth the effort. When things get too messy I can seem to concentrate as well.
I think I must have in the region of two hundred plus folders in Outlook but in fairness, they could do with a cleanout as well, some of them must be over ten years old 😳.

Hi there Twack. Thank you... I recently talked about Libreoffice which took over the office mantle from Openoffice a few years ago.

Also, I wrote a couple of posts on newish software called ’Notion’ (notion.os) which is the best software I have come across for getting well organised... which is surprisingly also FREE for individual use.

Of course, getting organised needs more than just the right tool. It also requires focused discipline of capturing stuff in the right place, clarifying its purpose and value, deciding next actions, prioritising those actions, then of course, getting things done.
I apologise Twack to you and anyone else who doesn’t need these words... Someone else reading your post just might :-).
Richard

Thank you, Richard, your words are most welcome here.
I remember you mentioned 'Notion' (and Libre) and I did have a quick look online.
I must have missed your posts on the 'Notion' platform though, I shall make amends and make sure I read through them. It could be a valuable asset.
Feel free to put the links to the articles in a reply, I am sure I am not the only one that would benefit from reading them.

I am planning a third post that will outline how I use Notion for writing.
Richard

I am looking forward to reading them, they are on my 'to do today' list.

I use LibreOffice on one of my computers, Richard! I am quite pleased with it!

Jeff

This reminds me of that ONE drawer that everyone has in their kitchen for holding gizmos, doodads, and whatchamacallits that you don't know where else to place. 👍

Appreciate the post, Twack
Isaiah 😊

You are very welcome Isaiah and that's a very astute observation. I haven't got one of those drawers, maybe that's why I have such a cluttered desktop.

That is a massive amount of icons Twack!!!! They really do need sorting ..... tut..... tut!
Must get back to work, popped in for a little light relief, lol.

I am grateful that you managed to stop by Linda. I am on the case and since I first wrote this post I have made use of the 'no where else to go' folder.
One day I will have a system in place that runs seamlessly, one day.

Yep, we will all have one of those one day, lol.

Yea don't pay for something you can get for free. It's like paying big money for a fancy gadget and never using half the functions.

So true Geoffrey, that's one of the reasons I first started refurbishing old computers as it 'grated' me to know that people were being sold systems that were 'over-specified' and full of software that would never get used.
